Suddenly, Nazir turned quiet as a mouse

Since June 16th newsbreak spread rumours of Dato Nazir Tun Abdul Razak starting a new political party, he suddenly turned quiet as a mouse.

It is almost 10 days of silence without the some great virtues and wisdom expressed by this capitalist investment banker turned socially conscious citizen. Let's not talk of the retrenchment in CIMB becuase he need to project an image of concern for the downtrodden rakyat.

Someone with his moral standing is needed to voice support for the suddenly quiet cause against the big bad 1MDB. The capture of the Swiss Xavier Justo in Thailand should not be a setback to criticise 1MDB.

Nazir must speak because when he speaks, people listen. Even Mat Sabu is looking forward for his entry into politics. After all, he is THE glorious son of the glorious late Tun Abdul Tazak.

As long as it does not sound or replicate anything closely resembling Sarawak Report, he should speak so that the public will think he sounded intelligent and sincere.

Perish such thought that Nazir was criticising 1MDB out of spite for losing out to Arab-Malaysian Investment Bank on the first 30 year bond deal in Malaysia and the lead role that comes with fat fees.
It was not Goldman Sachs as accused but Arab Malaysian.

Why should be concerned since he has got significant holding as a minority shareholder of CIMB. It is only Nazir's birthright to deserve such fat fees but now taken away by "Goldman Sach".

No one would believe that Nazir had such ambition to demand eldest brother appoint him as Minister of Finance. How could Rocky Bru even insinuate such preposterous preposition.

Nazir should continue to speak. Otherwise, no one could remember to ask Deloitte to begin auditing for FY ending March 2015.

It does not matter that the 1MDB office will be pack to the brim with auditors and investigators. Neither does it matter that the responsibility is not MoF but 1MDB management to call for the audit.

Malaysia desperately need such a Nazir to speak loud enough to get 1MDB directors to resign en-bloc. No one seemed to dare do so. Off course, the Deputy Prime Minister was not serious but talking in cryptic political language.

Don't tell me that just because some measly blogger told the public bluntly that Nazir left behind shit in CIMB for Tengku Zafril to clean made him turned mousy. Nazir could sue ananymous blogger just like he and his Anwarista buddy Dato Tong Kooi Ong warned of suing an anonymous blogger for implicating them at the beginning of ringgit slide.

And what is there another shit in the form of his close buddy Sir Tony Fernandez (Tan Sri is not an honour to his British liking) and Air Asia to worry when he has got enough shit for his loan in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Bet the dealmaker, fund manager and broker for GLCs, government established institutional investors, government-connected high networth individual and anything but not related to government must be busy fasting and performing ibadah in silent solitude. It must be tiring to be vocal under the sweltering heat.

Maybe others don't feel the heat. But Nazir does.

Doubt Sufi met Justo

In RPK's Malaysia Today posting, "Mahathir: The hunter turned hunted", he revealed that Tun M's assistant, Sufi Yusof had gone to Thailand to meet Xavier Justo and accused him as a party to a fraud.

Justo's own doing made the politicising of 1MDB issue turned the country topsy turvy.

In politics, all's fair in love and war. The political accusation on 1MDB made the line between sensibility and the simplified "thats all to it" reasoning become as thin as membrane.

Few lady characters active in the movement to criticise 1MDB and topple Dato Najib called us to pick up on our point of view.

The moment we expressed disinterest to any discussion resembling political rhetorics, they couldn't begin to talk intelligently and got emotional.

After failing to raise issues to nail any argument, they finally end up talking of perception. People on the ground overwhelmingly want Najib out.

We are only interested in talking about ensuring the basis and argument for or against Najib is on the right basis, not on emotional basis. To end such wasteful discussion, we asked: do they understand the 1MDB issue?

The moment they said No, we replied to tell them that perception argument are for the naive and idiot.

Those over reliance on perception to justify their stand are bringing themselves down to the level of the naive and idiots instead of providing leadership and guidance to them.

In the first place, was there a survey or any proper measures of perception as the basis of discussion?

If it is time for Najib to go, then he has to submit to God's will. They do their thing and Najib do their thing.

Too far from Justo

Coming back to Sufi Yusof.

Immediately upon news of the capture of Justo, RPK made that revelation. Unless he has an untampered photo, there is hardly any reason to believe it. It would be a slanderous act to stretch the psychological gain for more with a lie.

Sometime in 2012, Tun M wrote of Malays in Thailand losing their "kemelayuan" in his blog and there was a Berita Harian article related to the blog posting [read here]. They could not speak any more Malay, not even the northern Kelantan or Kedahan dilect.

It was after a trip Tun M made to certain part of Thailand. After the trip, there was believed to be follow-up. If RPK's contact is genuine, then he would have told him that Sufi was not there to meet Justo but for a worthy and noble cause. Sufi would not want to brag of his efforts so it is not necessary to tell.

The known place Sufi went was too far from the vicinity Justo was captured. His timeline does not tally with Justo's departure from Petrosaudi and his blackmail operation against Petrosaudi and 1MDB.

If truly Sufi did meet Justo, then it will link Justo as Tun M's source.

Differences in opinion should not be the barrier to friendship. True friends would not antagonise and troll on another just cause they see things differently. And differences in opinion does not mean not defending a friend being slandered.

Such claim is slanderous and makes no sense. Justo could have come over to Malaysia to deliver information or emailed it. Or he could give his materials through a trusted someone. Why would Tun M's office send someone over to collect such information?

This an unnecessary effort to inconvenient people with the law. If the need to defend Najib, then stick to defending Najib. But to answer allegations against Najib by not answering and doing endless personal attack on the messenger, that is a dumbass strategy.

Same with attacking Proton. If the real issues of Proton are made known, everyone - both side of the political competition - would be embarassed. One fella orchestrating the attack on Proton used to be on the board of a subsidiary. Covering his failure?

Political rhetorics

However, this issue of not answering questions has affected Tun M's side too. Despite the ball is on his side of the court, he has yet to provide proofs on the RM42 or RM27 or RM7 or billions stolen or disappearance allegation.

Tun M was cunning to get out of that one. He said Najib can ask me any questions. Always that fighter.

Nevertheless, after few days of silence and pressed to show proofs, Tun M rebuked the arrest of Justo as stage-managed [read it FMT here]. Sun Tzu's art of diversion at it's best. It is a fine example of the cornered tiger escaping through an opportunistic weak point along the barrier.

Prior to that most of the defensive reaction to Justo's arrest was to argue that "the arrest does not clear 1MDB". [One of many such arguments is by YB Dato Ariff Sabri here in FMT]. There was a spin to say the leak shows the 1MDB issue exist and true.

The political reply is simple, but rather shallow. Are the accusation against 1MDB based on tampered materials? Can they pinpoint which of their info are not tampered and the one tampered?

For the past few weeks after Arul Kanda have been answering the posed questions and doing quick replies, the manouvre by The Edge was to flank on the early TIA days and Petrosaudi investment with Jho Loh implicated.

We are all eyes and ears.

Although some bloggers were nitpicking on differences in statements and giving their own interpretation on statements with some still on a play of words, heck ... let them have their space. Not a major issue to ponder over.

The Cayman Island-BSI-Unit issue is pointless and irrelevant political rhetorics. As we see it, it was few leaders unable to explain off-shore banking operations.

It is hardly a lie or an act of robbery, heck ... let them say what they wish because they are pursuing it on the perception money involved in the Petrosaudi deal does not exist any more and merely on paper.

Anyway, if issue raised is related to governance issue, we are not in disagreement.

Tampered desperation

In fact, they were on the right track and getting our eyes and ears till The Edge resorted to challenge anonymous bloggers to sue.

The Edge sounded desperate because they got their timeline screwed up on Javace. In last week's issue, they are trying to doubt Arul Kanda and claim their info of Good Star Limited was not a Petrosaudi subsidiary as true. It was indicative of The Edge showing confidence in fake documents.

Maybe they were the one telling Justo to fake it. As Dato Rahman Dahlan said The Edge was "obsessed" with 1MDB and would have gone to any length to pin it down.

The timing of the arrest could be uncanny to not be stage-managed but the assault was well orchestrated and strategised. In other words, it was stage managed too.

Najib must be a really great PM to be able to stage managed using another country's police.

Nevertheless, the arguments after the arrest was interesting.

One argument found on the FB of the ladies that called us was to recycle an earlier argument. If truly Sarawak Report and The Edge were using tampered documents to undermine a state institution, then why not sue them?

In due time perhaps. Lawsuits are time consuling as it requires gathering of fact and proof. Making wild accusation on social media does not require more than 5 seconds. For known personalities, any statement get published on media portals in 2 hours the most.

For the time being, there is an criminal investigation process and that itself is vindication. Computer Crimes Act 1997 instituted then by Tun M made computer crimes borderless as seen now. Anyway no newspaper got sued or charged after Ops Lalang too.

Lawyer Tan Sri Dr Shafee Abdullah expressed the opinion that Tony Pua is an interested party and shown biasness on 1MDB to be a fair PAC member thus should excuse himself. Didn't we argued that before?

Tun M gave a masterly defense of Tony Pua. He said all PAC members are bias. That's very true and agreeable absolutely. It means PAC is not realiable. As we argued before, there is no power and expertise in PAC to be credible.

Meant to misled

But, problem with Tun M's argument is that he once said he prefer PAC over Auditor General.

On that, we differ but no no need to hate him for it. A professional, true incorruptible professional (not necessary the best) is anytime better than politicians.

For that matter, same with media.

A true unbiased media, devoid of sinister agenda, would not report as 1MDB’s US$4.5 billion rescue may weigh on Abu Dhabi’s investment firm. It is neither a rescue plan (or bailout like Perwaja or MAS) nor will it dent the "trillions" of Abu Dhabi money investment firms.

This is similar spin to a previous manipulated fact on Ananda's so-called RM2 billion lending to 1MDB. Someone know the details but ignored the bit about Maybank guarantee. Better let Arul Kanda swiftly reply this.

Anyway lets not take too serious with all these arguments. It is all shallow political debate meant to mislead the public understanding of the issue.

An issue that require 15 pages of financial and technical jargon filled explanation is demanded upon to be summarised into a one liner with good soundbyte.

A solution that requires little time to resolve was demanded now and now, no more than 3 months. This was when they made a big fuzz over cashflow problem due to cancelled listing and need to meet debt commitment.

Nobody asked who the idiot CEO that was greedy and refused to list in December 2013 when all was ready. No cashflow problem would have arise now.

But, when a solution is put into effect out of urgency and demanded upon, they say should wait after PAC or audit. No wonder the attack on Auditor's opinion of a going concern with Bugs Bunny complained to MIA.

All this is hardly about making the public understand the issue properly.

Self interest behind sabotage for new TUDM air base

$
0
0

There is a demonstration planned for tomorrow June 28th in Penang to protest against the plan to move TUDM air base in Butterworth and redeveloped the site. The base is situated in BN's parliamentary seat of Tasek Gelugor.

The plan was to move the squatters near the airstrip to an area within the same parliamantary area in Bandar Perda under the administration of the federal government. More than 10,000 units of low cost home will be built on the existing air base site. If the motive is to maintain political dominance, that would have served the purpose.

This needs highlighting so to repeat again, it is more than 10,000 units of low cost homes or 'rumah murah'. Not 'mampu milik' or affordable home which is seldom laughed off as 'mampu tengok' or affordable to view only.

The move is necessary because it is no more suitable to maintain the 1,000 acre (407 ha) old British air base in an area that is increasingly urban and unsafe to operate. The air base is the headquarter for the important and strategic Five Power Defense Arrangement [read Wikipedia here].

The new air base is planned for a rural location at Aru Kuda in Tasek Gelugor. The RM4 billion new air base could provide for 2,400 households of military personnel. Presumably that should be safe voters for BN.

The existing base will be developed into mixed development in which exact number of low cost housing slotted for the area is 11,250 homes including those allocated for the 260 squatter families on the existing air base.

This is where the uncanny ability of UMNO grassroot leaders to repeatedly shoot themselves at their own feet and face the wrath of voters.

Restless

It was last week that there was a police report made by Dato Shabudin Yahya against blogger Parpukari for seeking an answer with regard to a viral message claiming he had called the PM coward. [The said posting is here].

The message reads as below:
PM Najib Bacul!

Wahai orang Penang! Tolong sampaikan mesej ini pada YB tersebut. Tq
After the police report, Shabudin spoke to TV3 to deny saying any such words and remain supportive of Dato Najib. It is natural for him as a Division head do so. If not denied immediately, it does not matter whether it is true or false for it can be very unsettling.

There must be a reason behind Shabuddin's jumpiness to make police report over a mere enquiry. Though the problem was a misunderstanding and amicably solved between the blogger and Shabudin [read here], the bigger problem relating to the airbase has yet to be resolved.

The squatters expecting to move to their new homes have expressed their unhappiness to the perceived intentional delay.

Shabuddin is the federal appointed Chairman of PERDA, an organisation established under the Prime Minister's Department by the former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah to undertake regional physical and socio-economic development for a designated area of Seberang Prai, Penang.

For quite sometime, the PERDA Chairman's John Hancock is needed to move the federal plan forward. Thus it is widely believed that he was the stumbling block to hold back PERDA's Board of Directors from making the necessary approvals.

Through his other associates, the PERDA Chairman had put up barriers to protest the move of the air base to Arul Kuda, a rural location in Tasek Gelugor and redevelop the air base into an "art and leisure centre".

The excuse given was that part of the planned 809 ha site for the new air base was planned for low cost and affordable housing in line with the targeted 20,000 low cost and affordable homes for whole of Penang. [read MI here].

Where has the current plan divert from the previous plan?

It is believed that there are many reasons for the resistance and it has nothing to do with the current location being strategic for its closeness to the sea. Noticeably they tried to playdown the safety issues relating to the squatter village at Kampung Paya Terbakar near the air strip.

The insecurity with recently announced TSR Synergy's staged planned development for part of the current air base is unwarranted.

Many local community leaders are already presuming there is bribery involved when those in the position of authority - be it politicians or civil servants - are making excuses and cooking up all sort of new cautionary reasons to prevent proceeding forward.

Since the hot issue in the news is Xavier Justo, lets call it blackmail, but no tampering is involved. Maybe there is tampering. The plan to hold a demonstration on the excuse that it will destabilise the voters profile could be considered as tampering.

Naturally the presumption eventually leads to outright accusation. It is claimed that Dato Shabudin is demanding a sizeable amount of money to revive his ability to sign letters. A new twist to the rumour is going around saying it is not just him but there are other beaks that need whetting.

Co-incidently, Shabudin and UMNO Tasek Gelugor have kept themselves mum on this plan after he was told to proceed with the plan from a meeting with the Prime Minister. And one can expect that at tomorrow's demonstration, there will not be in sight a single soul from Tasek Gelugor. All one need see are certain familiar faces and one can confirm tomorrow's demonstration is a planned effort.

Self interest

One reason to the resistance that have been uncovered is of a development project on a PERDA land adjacent to the planned new air base.

PERDA had awarded the construction to close associates within the Tasek Gelugor Division but the plan was naturally rejected by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on reason of safety to the new air base. There are clear municipal by-laws on that.

Several companies identified of having received the awards are Puncak Mekar Engineering Sdn Bhd, Pastech Engineering Sdn Bhd, GDW Mengkuang Sdn Bhd and Bumi Prospect Development Sdn Bhd.

A planned sales brochure are ready for pre-sales of Desa Ara Permai condo, 3 storey gated community homes, terrace houses, semi-D homes, bungalow homes, and shop lots with Oriental Max Group of Companies as marketing agent.

Talking of political concern, the brochures is written in both English and Chinese.

Although Guan Eng may have denied knowledge of the redevelopment plan [read here], sources from among property players in Penang believed Guan Eng has no objection to the new air base and development of the existing air base.

Contrary to the political propaganda made against Guan Eng, he conducts himself in a business-like manner when it comes to business matters.

Not only it is his aspiration to give a Singapore-like urban and modern look for Penang, it helps to pre-oocupy Betty Chiew with more personal up-keep of new dresses, handbags, jeweleries, and Swiss facial treatment, and also regular meeting with bankers in Hong Kong. It allay her away from bothering him and throwing ashtrays in the office.

In the same manner as PAP in Singapore, DAP state government would apply stated regulation or policy for their action on their political foe as happened in the recent removal of UMNO logo in front of their Penang office.

On matter of business, Guan Eng could set aside politics. Just be prepared to hear him make false claims that it is his effort as he did on the federal assisted funding for the entrepreneurs of The Light Hotel at Seberang Jaya.

Also be prepared to hear Guan Eng getting blamed for the air base development. The truth to the matter it is local leaders of UMNO Tasek Gelugor and Penang that is the culprit.

Our late sifu spent a bit of time as a lecturer in Penang. He often described such phenomenon as typical of the back-stabbing and opportunistic mamak politics in UMNO Penang.

This became a prevailing  disgust of the Malay constituents towards UMNO Penang and part of the reason PKR strive in Penang. Over a period of time and decades of repeated cycles of occurrence, it became a cultural problem in the party that is too in-grained to be addressed.

As happened at the recent Permatang Pauh by-election recently, even the pure Malay in UMNO behaves like these mamak. They have no qualms about back stabbing their own party candidate for self interest.

"Self interest" placed TUDM air base under security risk

$
0
0

The planned demonstration yesterday was cancelled. The reason could be the current heat spell and Ramadhan. Was told by Penang sources that there was no support to hold it.

The often cited reason to oppose moving the TUDM air base and development of the current site was low cost housing. So Penang UMNO's statement yesterday seemed to divert the issue to state government's delay for PR1MA development [read in TMI here]. It turns out they were referring to allegation by state exco on housing, Jagdeep Singh Deo [read The Star here].

Utusan Malaysia today still reported Zainal expressing UMNO Penang's opposition and citing Bumiputera interest as reason [read here]. Either they do not know or hiding it from the public, more than half of the targeted low cost housing will be achieved by the move.

In NST today, there is a two-article feature which highlights the security risk of the most important RMAF air base in the country. How could BN's opposition leader, Datuk Jahara Hamid claim the air base is 'underdeveloped'.

The first article described in disbelieve the security risk of the biggest air base in the country:

Danger right under their noses

VULNERABLE: NST Probes Team finds security lapses at RMAF Butterworth

TASNIM LOKMAN
BUTTERWORTH

FROM where we were, we could see it all — aircraft hangars, the control tower, aircraft dispersal areas with two Royal Australian Air Force P-3C Orions and two Nuri helicopters parked next to each other, the Alert 5 hangar, and aircraft shelters with several F/A-18D Hornets and British Aerospace Hawks inside.

Over four days, the New Straits Times Probes Team surveyed the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base here for gaps and chinks in security.

The lapses in security that we found at the airbase, which the RMAF categorises as its main facility, were shocking.

Housing developments on the periphery of one of the nation's most sensitive military installations present a serious security risk.

Houses built inches away from the base perimeter wall provide ideal firing positions for terrorists to launch a coordinated attack.

Multi-storey homes on opposite sides of the runway give a clear and unobstructed view of targets, including the ammunition storage dump, and of military aircraft taking off and landing.

A portion of land at the end of the base's runway has also been encroached on by squatters.
In some instances, the runway approach lights sit right in the squatters' backyard.

The lights jut out in between 23 makeshift houses and 17 illegal workshops, factories and storage units. Structures have been built around a Series of light bars and strobe lights, some of which stand as tall as the approach lights.

It is understood the encroached land and approach light belongs to the RMAF. The lights allows pilots to see the runway and align their aircraft upon arriving at a prescribed point. This approach lighting system is designed to enhance the safety of aircraft operations, particularly in conditions of reduced visibility.

RMAF insiders spoke to the NST to voice their concerns over the encroachment, which they said affects operational security and puts their lives at risk.

"These buildings clearly are a threat to the military establishment," said a pilot, call sign "Poohbear".

Another concern was that the air-base often plays host to a number of air forces and is almost always the staging point for large-scale air exercises. These include the Five-Power Defence Agreement exercises and Cope Taufan. With these come top-secret, highly-classified assets, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor stealth fighter.

Squadron leader and commanding officer of 92 Wing Detachment of the Royal Australian Air Force, Sam Barnes, was shown photos of two P-3C Orions taken from outside the base. When he finally managed to speak, his tone was hushed and subdued.

"Where were these taken? I'll take this up with Canberra," was all he said.

Granted, the current array of "standoff" and "smart" weapons available precludes having to get up close to the targets, but the ability to get real-time intel and eyes-on-tar-get analysis is still crucial in firming up any battle plans.

The unfettered development at the periphery of the airbase also contravenes International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, which spell out a clear safety buffer zone.

The Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) is the local authority with jurisdiction over developments in the area, but said it should not be held solely responsible if there are suggestions that structures surrounding the airbase pose a serious threat to the base.

This, MPSP president Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif said, is because during its bi-monthly One-Stop Centre programme meetings, nobody voiced their concerns when the projects were discussed.

"It would be unfair to blame us as there were many parties, including from the air force itself, who are part of the group. There are 22 people sitting in the meetings, including technical and planning department experts, engineers, the Public Works Department and RMAF itself.

"The projects (around the air-base) would have been referred to the RMAF and they had the chance to vet it before giving the nod... If they had any reservations, the developer would have been advised," said Maimunah, who is also chairman of the approving committee.

She added that the council had never heard of any concerns pertaining to high-rise buildings in the area during the meetings.

Maimunah said housing developments surrounding the airbase 1 had complied with the local authority's rules and regulations.

"Of course, the local authority is sqi the approving body, but everyone has had a fair say prior, so if anything happens, it will be unfair for the council to be solely blamed," she said at her office.

There have been calls for the airbase to be relocated 16km east of its current location in Ara Kuda.

Air Force chief Tan Sri Roslan Saad categorically denies Maimunah's claims, saying the RMAF had, on many occasions, registered its objection to the council and state government.

"The base has been there for decades and structures have been built around it over the years. The airbase needs a buffer zone."

The Department of Civil Aviation, in a document the NST team saw, had also voiced concerns over the squatters' encroachment. It cautions that surrounding structures, including those built by squatters at the end of the runway, could pose a safety and security threat.

The NST had also been made to understand that the RMAF is not totally opposed to the idea of relocating but had listed more than 10 conditions if it were to happen.

These included the realignment of electric cables that passed through the northern region of the new site that could interfere with operations of aircraft placement.

Several hills in the new area, namely Bukit Batu and Bukit Seraya, also needed to be lowered to a safe level for aircraft to land.

It is understood that before any relocation is initiated, the RMAF wants an undertaking from the local authorities to take control of a 15km radius at the site to curb new developments and comply with ICAO requirements.
The article indicate that the security risk had developed as a result of the 'tidak apa' attitude of the local government. If the politicians had to take responsibility for the slackening attitude of the state government officers, then it applies to both the past BN and present DAP government.

Maybe it partly explains Lim Guan Eng willingness to see the move to Ara Kuda and reject the application for development by Perda adjacent to the new air base site. The rejected development was written in the previous posting as the ulterior motive behind UMNO Penang leaders' opposition to the project [read here].

In the second article, news editor Fara Naz Karrim felt she could have done much damage to the air base had she been a terrorist and armed with more than her camera.

Thank God, I was armed only with a camera...
NST news editor
FARRAH NAZ KARIM
DID you guys realise that when you were about to JLS land on the runaway after your morning sortie, you were at eye-level with me? I could actually see you in the cockpit."

"Where were you? No I didn't."

The tone of the sahur session I was having with a group of fighter pilots based at one of the country's most strategic installations quickly turned intense.

Earlier in the day, I had secured a spot at a housing project adjacent to the base. From my elevated vantage point, I watched a squadron of jet-fighters take off and land.

1 noted their types, their take-off times, how many there were in each formation or element, their weapon loadouts to see if they were tasked with air-to-air, air-to-ground or maritime recon/strike missions, and if they carried external tanks — details that would be valuable to a foreign power or terror organisation intent on doing us harm.

A day earlier, I found another spot at the opposite side of the runway that gave me a clear, unobstructed view of the control tower, the aircraft shelters, with three Hornets and four Hawks inside them, an aircraft dispersal area with two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft, a fuel storage farm and an ammunition dump.

I was armed with a small compact camera with 20-times magnification. If I had been part of a terrorist cell armed with man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS), the amount of damage my team and I could inflict in one afternoon would be incalculable.

Rapid development around the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Teluk Air Tawar, Butterworth, Penang, had not escaped the attention of these men, who are at the tip of the spear.

"This has been our concern for a while. The threats against this base are real, but we are mere soldiers," said "Gump", a call sign this reporter shall use to refer to one of the pilots, who wore an increasingly worried look as this reporter unveiled more.

Out came the camera, that for two days before, had been recording sensitive images and footage of the high-security area that should never be in the hands of a civilian.

They watched silently and concurred that even those with little knowledge of security and defence would be able to pinpoint exactly where strategic assets and high-value targets were located.

These included the very fleet of aircraft that had been deployed to chase away unwelcomed aircraft straying into our airspace and those used in the fight against foreign intruders in Sabah in 2013.

The New Straits Times Probes team made a thorough assessment of the airbase's periphery. Structures from two massive housing projects near the airbase tower over its perimeter wall, offering a tantalising glimpse of the juicy targets that lay beyond.

At the first construction site, which is about 70 per cent complete, the team scaled the top of the four-storey-high superlink house. The view from the bathroom was arresting.

If the buyer was a defence enthusiast, or God forbid, a foreign agent sent to monitor these assets and their movements, he would have had unbridled access to intelligence that our enemies would pay millions for and not blink an eye.

At the next project, the fence was practically inches away ffom the base perimeter walls. You don't have to be a high jumper to cross over and make your way to Alert 5 hangar, or the "Last Chance" pit, where the safeties for the ordinance are removed before the jets take-off.

Just beyond that lay the ammunition bunker (the team shall withhold its location). On a moonless night, a saboteur with satchel charges and C-4 plastic explosives could make a quick, surreptitious dash to the facility, blow the armoured doors off the hinges, lob the charges inside, and wait for mayhem to ensue.

From the balcony of the master bedroom of the house that stands no less than 6.1m-high, the team observed the goings-on in the base. Regular, roving security patrols were non-existent. Not once were we challenged, hailed or queried from the time we got there at 9am, to the time we left at 1.30pm.

On one or two occasions, we saw one or two Provos making their way beside the perimeter wall, but our presence went unnoticed.

With the global threat of terrorism, one that the country is not excluded from, security at this critical, strategic base and others like it must be fortified.

The Butterworth base has traditionally been the staging area of large-scale exercises and missions, and hosts some of the world's major air forces, including the United States Air Force (USAF), the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) and the RAAF, with their sophisticated, top-secret assets.

Just last year, the USAF deployed its much-vaunted and super-secret stealth fighter, the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, to this region — a first.

Accompanying the Raptors were the Boeing F-15C Eagles, which, despite being in service for almost 40 years, have never been defeated in combat and is still a closely-guarded secret.
It was only in April that the Home Ministry had warned that army camps were believed to be among the targets of Islamic State militants rounded up by the authorities.

The NST would also like to bring up an incident which, to date, has not received media attention, just to illustrate the fact that this threat is real. Soon after the Sabah incursion, an attack was carried out at the RMAF Labuan base. The suspects were Suluks who had wanted to send a message to the military that if they "had wanted to, they could have".

The incident resulted in a lock-down at the base that primarily housed their engineers.

It happened once. It could happen again...
One reason known for increasing disenchantment by military personnel against the BN government have been the poor working condition, inadequate facility and welfare provided to them. Seldom the case the reason had oftenly been attributed to political intervention and politicians' self interest.

With community social role taken care, the defense of the realm should take precedent over the "self interest" of local government bureaucrats and politicians. Government must stand firm by their decision and UMNO Penang should stop their typical 'mamak'antic.

Bumpy ride ahead for Airasia shareholders

When Air Asia Indonesia plane crashed last year, Tan Sri Tony Fernandez was at his finest in managing crisis. The Malaysian government and MAS or maybe now MAB have lots to learn on communication and public relations from him.

Since the expose by a Hong Kong based research company, GMT Research, Air Asia shares have been struggling. Tony F's response don't seem to be working to arrest the fall [read past posting here and here].

In fact, news report today are talking about short selling is at large. This will not be good news for AirAsia shares.

A quick look at the chart shows the emerging of a dead cat bounce pattern.

Dead cat bounce is market lingo for shares not likely to see bottom yet to have any chance in the near future of rebounding. A living cat could fall and jump back but dead cat bounce are not sustainability. The analogy is pretty much like the diagram below:

To get more technical, there will be those mumbo jumbo about retracement and percentage retracement as predictor of shares future movement. See below:

It certainly does not look good when Reuter's report the news like this:
Short-sellers target AirAsia amid questions over accounting

Published: 29 June 2015 7:07 PM

Short-sellers are targetting AirAsia Bhd amid accounting worries at Asia's biggest budget carrier, with its shares among the most borrowed securities in Southeast Asia in recent weeks, data shows.

Loaned stock for Malaysia's AirAsia rose to a high of 47 million shares on June 23 from 7 million two weeks prior to that, according to data from financial software company SunGard Astec Analytics.

That means sentiment towards AirAsia's shares, which slumped by as much as a third since June 9 and wiped off nearly half a billion dollars of the airline's market value, has worsened, despite AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes' recent assertions that the carrier has a solid balance sheet and business plan.

"We have seen that people borrowed the stock, which thus indicates that there are short-sellers out there taking an increasing interest in AirAsia," Madalin Prout, senior relationship manager at SunGard Astec Analytics, told Reuters.

Concerns about AirAsia came to the fore after a June 10 report by little known GMT Research said the airline uses related-party transactions with loss-making associate carriers to boost its earnings. Hong Kong-based GMT also said the carrier needed US$1.9 billion in funding.

Short-sellers sell borrowed stocks, hoping to profit by buying back them back at a cheaper price and pocketing the difference. Securities lending is seen as a proxy for short- selling.

Borrowing levels of AirAsia's shares rose to as much as 83% of the total securities available for lending, the third highest among the most liquid stocks in Southeast Asia, before easing to 69% on June 24.

This is still above the 12% average borrowing levels for Malaysian and Southeast Asian stocks.

Analysts have cut AirAsia's 2015 earnings estimates by nearly 6% on average since June 10, with 14 out of 22 brokers reducing estimates. The company's shares are down about 29% since June 9.

"We not only view AirAsia's recent updates on funding plans for associates (through convertible bonds and IPOs) with scepticism, but also argue claims of improving prospects are unvalidated," HSBC analysts said in a report dated June 22.

HSBC said the performance of AirAsia's Philippine and Indonesian ventures had to significantly improve to attract any external funding in the near term.

AirAsia did not immediately respond to an email seeking comments on the HSBC report. It has said it expects the Indonesia affiliate to break even and its Philippine business to have returned to profitability by the end of this year. – Reuters, June 29, 2015.

Past is past [read here], nothing vindictive. Criticism can be seen as an half empty glass or half full. If past criticism had been taken as precaution, Air Asia could have avoided much of the problems they are facing today.

Only comfort would be that news report tend to be lagged because news only report what happened. On the hind sight, everyone can talk cock and claim be an expert. At the heat of the moment, their hands turned cold to make the decision as their analytical ability to assess situation get muddled.

Investors are not interested to know about the past. It happened already. They want to know what will happen in the future. Tony F need to give them the assurance that there is a future for Air Asia for them to hold and wait out on to their shares. That he can do but can he convince?

Investors need a true assessment of the situation. Nazir, who finally talked today [read here], would have advised Tony F on something he has been talking a lot on lately, wouldn't he?

He seem to want to advise many people except himself for the shit he created in CIMB. Hopefully his next exit is not the same cell with Xavier Justo.

"Nasi kangkang" way to CEO-ship

$

Earlier this year, an agency under the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia (MCM) undergone a change at the top post.

Many speculations arise as to why the previous Executive Chairman was removed. Prior to his removal, a certain blogger friend accused him of dishing contracts to wrong people, However, the facts are all screwed up thus making it more a set-up than a credible allegation. It turns out there were questionable appointments on the advisory "board".

There was complains against him for being light in his enforcement. But, JPA had no allocation to their request for additional staff and training to increase surveliance, investigation and prosecution.

It is not Malaysia without some politics in the background. One of his previous officer rose up the rank in politics. This opens up to various conspiracies.

These are all water under the bridge. He left and much effort was needed to hold him down in Malaysia. Otherwise, he could have left abroad and get paid in the millions.

The new appointee had an assignment in the "... decoupling the role of the chief executive officer (CEO) from the role of chairman...". It was to solve a previous problem that could open up opportunity for upward mobility, but create a new problem for the organisation.

A "nasi kangkang" one ...

The mere mention of "nasi kangkang" conjures up the image of an ambitous woman willing to do anything to get what she wants to the extent of using black magic on her own husband.

The methodology applied is not black magic but the prospect to the organisation will get as dark.

The woman is no Sofia Jane as in the actress that did the squat on rice scene in U Wei's 1993 movie "Perempuan, Isteri dan Jalang". That was how the word nasi kangkang got into the public conscience. Since no name is to be mentioned but lets just.refer her as "Sofia Jane".

How "Sofia Jane" will make her way up is none of anybody's freakin' business. It does not matter in the sense that most of the bitchings in office politics tend to be hearsay, speculative, and laced with envy.

What matters is the organisation and industry when she move up without any credentials and in such devious ways.

For the past 15 years, she was stuck to a single position of no significance in the organisation. It is all public relation without any exposure to policy formulation, regulatory work, industry development, and in the like Xavier Justo, the expectation of time to monitor and enforce.

Rather harsh to describe her as doing merely GRO work with the organisation's international contacts. It is not the appropriate thing to say in the month of Ramadhan despite the talk at the water cooler to described the modus operandi of this mamak lady with a chinese surname closely resemble one.

Public or international relation requires personal touch and soft skills which cannot be taught and requires some natural gift and talent. It can be done effectively in a professional manner but not as described in Malay as "mengeceh", "merenget", "mengada-ngada" and "menggedik-gedik". The English description could be just flirt.

With her limited skill and knowledge in the industry, she did manage to get herself promoted to some "strategy"-titled officer position. After 15 years, she cannot be left in the same minor role in support and services.

However, that promotion gave her access to apply her skill on the new Chairman and Minister.

The Chairman is a regular masjid goer in his neighbourhood in Damansara Utama so not gullible to "nasi kangkang". One brilliant Malay professor in regional studies used to fall to "nasi kangkang cina" and was black magic by layers of seven dragons, mind you.

The returned former Chairman and former Ministry Secretary General is capable of holding his own. Could he resist the flirtation of "Sofia Jane"?

"Sofia Jane" waits for him daily at office doorstep at 7 am, accompany him to office, and carry his bag up on the pretext of briefing him. Not that he will succumb to this woman's flirt, but it is the time spent casually that is most potent in winning the heart and trust of a man.

As it is, all the Chairman email get CC-ed to her. It would seem none of Chairman's work is confidential from her.

That takes care of one side of the power equation. By 9 AM, she waits for the Menteri. Same routine.

Dato Seri Shabery is quite steady a bloke. A simple man with no hiccup for any worldly trappings. Lives modestly in a Desa Pandan apartment. Hope he could keep it that way.

The talk in the organisation is that he has become so casual with her that "Sofia Jane" made some verile selfie pictures that could be dangerous when viraled. Simple fun that could be dangerous to any politicians with a rural constituent. There are still many Xavier Justos out there.

"Sofia Jane" has got her strangle on the power sources to near completion. Now it is for her to close in on the ultimate power when the CEO role is decouple from the Execitive Chairman position. That "strategy"-titled officer position has brought her close enough.

That will be access to power in the area of regulation, licensing, and criminalising offenses. It is a gold digger's dream to the pot of gold hounded by many past and current politicians and civil servants with corrupt tendency - the RM1.4 billion Annual Universal Services Provider fund.

Shabery just spoke about cost for building telecommunication insfrastructure is more than the allocation [read MI here]. Burp ....

There is a saying, "People who feel the need to control others, don't have control over themselves."That makes her dangerous.

This is the month of Ramadhan so someone will say it not appropriate to bitch on someone without a concern. The concern is significant. Without the complete power, she has proven to be abusive.

At only Jusa B rank, she managed to wiggle her way for first class overseas air travel. It does not end there. She get received at airport by chaffeaur driven car.

Edmund Burke said, "The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse."What will happen to the organisation?

"Controllers, abusers and manipulative people don't question themselves. They don't ask themselves if the problem is them. They always say the problem is someone else."

With a leadership without knowledge, experiance, skill and creativity to lead, such a senario is likely to happen. It has happened before and still happening in organisation like MAS. The organisation will begin to breakdown. Office politics and backstabbing among staff and managers on the rise.

The beginning of the end for the work of decades.

Tantrum Tony Pua getting caught too often ...huh?

$

Known to be quick with his attack and counter response on public issues, but of late, Tony Pua was yet again caught for making wrong accusation on 1MDB using wrong facts.

At the rate he erred repeatedly, Raja Petra should include him in the list of those suspected of tampering with blackmailed email from Xavier Justo [read in MT here]. Police should call him for investigation just like they intend to do on The Edge.

The Oxford PPE graduate does not seem to be much of the wunderboy he project himself. Nevertheless, known for the Christian-state revelation, ex-DAP Razali alerted that he is the boy genius to watch though he pretend to look odd.

If not for Tun Mahathir entering the chorus of critics, his and Rafizi's effort in getting attention to politicise the complex 1MDB issue would have been futile. Tony Pua couldn't pin down even Dato Ahmad Maslan in early November 2014. Direct guarantee by government on the loan is limited. He should have raised the issue of cross default.

If there is something to learn, it is that spinning and drama script does not take an issue far enough. It is fact that sustain issue. So those without the knowledge and limited ability to argue over a single corrected mistake of Arul Kanda to call him liar, then stay out of this issue.

Stick to within your playpen.

Still on IPIC

This time he is at it again to pick on the unwinding of deals with IPIC. Thinking he is an Oxford PPE graduate, he start to think he is an Investment Banker and tried to catch Arul Kanda covering up some part of the deal.

Tony accused government of providing a guarantee in unwinding the various deals with IPIC. It is a series of complex deals between 1MDB and IPIC. In an attempt to keep it simple, we described it as withdrawing Fixed Deposit before maturity. [Past posting here] Not too difficult a concept, right?

But the wise guy he is was still pursuing an issue he tried to speculate subsequent to the announcement. He had pose the question on what 1MDB get as reported by The Edge market May 30th here. 1MDB CEO gave a statement directly dedicated to answer Tony Pua:

1MDB Response to Incorrect Statements by YB Tony Pua

We refer to online news reports today, quoting various statements attributed to YB Tony Pua, in relation to a binding term sheet agreed between 1MDB and IPIC recently.

1MDB clarifies as below:

1. Neither the Ministry of Finance, nor the Government of Malaysia, have provided guarantees for the recent commercial transaction between 1MDB and IPIC.

2. It is publicly known that IPIC issued guarantees, in 2012,  for the payment of interest and principal on two USD1.75 billion bonds issued by 1MDB, totalling USD3.5 billion of principal and up to USD2 billion of interest. The Government has not guaranteed either of these bonds.

3.  As such, it is irresponsible of YB Tony Pua to suggest that the recent binding term sheet between 1MDB and IPIC, a commercial transaction, has resulted in further guarantee obligations by the Government of Malaysia.  It is public information that the Government has only issued a “letter of support”, and this was for a different USD3.0 billion (approx. RM11.35 billion) bond issued by 1MDB.  In total, the Government has only provided explicit guarantees for RM5.8 billion of 1MDB debt.

4. YB Tony Pua has deliberately misled the public by failing to mention the crucial “and vice versa” clause in relation to the “indemnity”, i.e. the indemnity applies both ways – to IPIC as well as 1MDB – in relation to performance of obligations by the parties.  Such a two-way indemnity is a standard clause in commercial transactions to ensure neither party is “out of pocket” for non-performance by the other. 1MDB confirms that it fully intends to perform its obligations under the binding term sheet.

The binding term sheet executed with IPIC is a key component of the 1MDB rationalisation plan as announced by the Ministry of Finance on 29 May 2015.  The success of this approach has been evidenced by the recent repayment of a RM3.6 billion loan by 1MDB.  Commercial negotiations are ongoing between 1MDB and IPIC to reach a definitive agreement, which will ultimately result in a reduction of approximately RM16 billion of 1MDB debt.  1MDB fully intends to share further information once a final agreement is reached between the parties.
With the facts all clearly stated and spelled out, Tony Pua could only hide his embarassment by doing a Lim Kit Siang squirm to the denial of any form of guarantee.

He goes on a tantrum to accuse Arul and Najib as liar, not him and of twisting facts [read MChronicle, FMT and TMI here, here, and here, respectively]. No guarantee means no guarantee. Work it from there scallywog.

Somehow or rather we sense that Tony Pua is merely building up for an armaggedon against Arul Kanda at the next convening of PAC. He had cast aspersion that he would not attend PAC. At the last scheduled hearing, MoF fumbled on the notice and there was an important scheduled engagement in Abu Dhabi.

Tony Pua must be taking his frustration for not able to get 1MDB to default. They never once defaulted and is still a going concern. And, the persons he should pursue intensely are past CEOs, Dato Shahrol and Dato Helmi, not Arul Kanda.

Arul made a statement a day earlier to give a commitment to attend PAC. He hit back at Tony Pua for  casting heavy criticism towards him and increasingly looking of getting too personal. Tony Pua is looking objective and his ability to be unbias, fair and just in his assessment at PAC is doubtful.

Cheap shot

One can see his reaction when Arul announced invitation for RFP for the Pulau Indah and Penang:

Monetisation of Air Itam and Pulau Indah land

“As part of its strategic review, 1MDB had announced on 18 February 2015 its intention to monetise the company’s land parcels in Air Itam and Pulau Indah through joint ventures or outright sales. Subsequently, this was confirmed in the rationalisation plan presented to Cabinet on 29 May 2015. I am pleased to update that we have received significant expressions of interest in both land parcels. Accordingly, 1MDB intends to appoint an independent real estate consultant to assist in reviewing the various proposals. A further announcement providing an update on progress will be made within the next two weeks."

- Arul Kanda, President and Group Executive Director
That is when he went on a low blow today using Xavier Justo's conduit for lies. Perhaps Edge Financial Daily stopped using fake email as promised to police.

The article and report by MMO below:

The Edge: 1MDB claim of ready buyers for Air Itam, Pulau Indah land reeks of LTH fumble
Published: July 1, 2015 09:57 AM GMT+8

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 ― A local business daily today questioned 1Malaysia Development Berhad's (1MDB) claim of “significant expressions of interest” in its land parcels in Air Itam and Pulau Indah, equating it to Lembaga Tabung Haji's (LTH) still-unfulfilled claim that it would pull in profit from a controversial land purchase from 1MDB.

The Edge Financial Daily said in an editorial piece that it is unknown if 1MDB has received actual proposals to buy the two land parcels or if the latter's executive director, Arul Kanda Kandasamy, was merely announcing that they will name an independent consultant in the next two weeks.

“Is 1MDB saying buyers for the Air Itam and Pulau Indah land will be named within two weeks?” the paper asked.

“Otherwise, can anyone be blamed for thinking that the statement sounds all too similar to the one made by Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim on the ready buyers available for the pilgrims' fund's controversial RM188.5 million purchase of the 0.63ha Signature Tower land in the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX)?

“Did Abdul Azeez not say Tabung Haji was expected to make at least RM5 million profits when the land sale competed as early as end-May? The last we checked, a buyer has not been named,” the paper added.

The Edge said the least 1MDB can do is name the consultant that they should have already hired to evaluate the “significant expressions of interest” the state-owned firm claims the two land parcels have received, to lend credence to Arul Kanda's statement yesterday.

The business daily said this is especially needed in the case of the Air Itam plot, on which 1MDB spent RM1.056 billion for a majority stake in 234 acres of encumbered land from private owners, including from associates of Penang tycoon Tan Sri Lim Gait Tong.

Despite owning most of the land, 1MDB would still need to get the buy in from the estimated 1,200 ground tenants on the Air Itam plot, which could potentially work out to some RM108 million in compensation payment, the paper added.

“Would any third party want to jump into the fray if there is no assurance of a settlement with these ground tenants who are not mere squatters?” The Edge queried.

The paper also raised questions over the status of the 310-acre Pulau Indah land, noting that there has not been any news of 1MDB finalising the RM294.378 million price to buy the plot from Tadmax Resources Bhd.

“The sale was supposed to be completed yesterday, according to Tadmax's December 16, 2014 statement. At the time of writing, there was no update on whether the deal has been completed,” it said.

Debt-riddled 1MDB announced yesterday it has received “significant” proposals to buy two large parcels of land in Selangor and Penang even as critics question the state-owned investment’s purchase of them.

In a statement, Arul Kanda said the Cabinet had been informed of the company’s intention to “monetise” its land in Pulau Indah, Selangor and Air Itam, Penang through joint ventures or outright sales on February 15 this year.

Arul Kanda added that the company will appoint an independent real estate consultant to review the proposals and will provide an update of the development in the next two weeks.

1MDB’s announcement came after opposition MP Tony Pua questioned the real estate deals, in particular the 310-acre land in Pulau Indah the company bought for RM282 million from Tadmax Resources Bhd, after securing a US$150-million (RM540 million) loan from Export Import (EXIM) Bank.

The DAP MP has suggested that the transaction was a front to bail out troubled government-linked companies, pointing out that Tadmax was formerly known as Wijaya Baru Global Bhd before November 2013, and that Wijaya was known for its involvement in the RM12.5 billion Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.
This is a cheap shot and unprofessional conduct unbecoming of an MP. It is known that Tabung Haji issue is devious game of some pariah unschooled blogger and there is justification to the deal yet they are using it again.

He must have corporate backing him so as to get the land for cheap by making public fund refrain from bidding.

Goofy

They've got Xavier Justo, we've got Xaviera Hollander

DAP has given support for Tony Pua to attend PAC despite pressure on him to excuse himself. PAC Chairman Dato Nurjazlan Mohamed should keep him in proper perspective as he is bound to get personal.

Tony Pua should remember that he has been gullible to mistake and goofed on many many occasions. Lets us not get too far back.

There was an incident in Parliament in mid November when he accused 1MDB of securing a new RM3 billion IPP for RM11 billion. He goes on with the rhetoric that it will result increase electricity prices for consumers.

It turned out it was the 3B IPP contract won by 1MDB.

It must be on a November 16th 2014 session that he accused 1MDB subsidiary of not submitting annual accounts. Obviously that is untrue and he had attended session with auditors.

It is no crowing glory to pursue the Cayman Island fund because neither him or those critics nor the Ministers got it right. BSI Singapore was only the custodian bank for the liquid asset of units in SWF. Arul Kanda corrected an earlier mistake made and he is dubbed liar.

Tony Pua accused Petrosaudi deal a con job at end of February [read MI here]. Subsequently The Edge Weekly went on a three weekend pursuit of Jho Loh to link him in the alleged Petrosaudi conjob. The stopped doing so in the latest issues.

We've suspected it looks like a conjob and Joh Loh is part of a scam. However, recent development emanating from Bangkok does look like The Edge was conned by Xavier or a party to fabricate Xavier's emails. Sarawak Report already admitted to use of fake email.

Thus far too many parties making same wromg accusations. They've got Xavier Justo, so we have our Xaviera Hollander and it will be a tell it like it us on Petrosaudi tomorrow. Damn with the spin or play of words of others.

In the midst of political and economic pressure, yesterday's Fitch upgrade rating on Malaysia was a welcome relief for Prime Minister Dato Najib Tun Abdul Razak.

Analyst are fine with the upgrade, reports MMO here. Fund Manager hails it, report Rakyat Post here.  Ringgit and stocks jumped, Economic Times reported here. With that affirmation, it temporarily allay the blame on 1MDB for the predicament on several variables of the economy.

Arul Kanda explains as he is still at it to rebut every of Tony Pua's caustic remarks of 1MDB.

Fitch rating

The NST reported the good news:

Fitch Ratings revises Malaysia's outlook to stable

1 July 2015 @ 8:00 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's zest in continuously improving its economic fundamentals and the government's prudent fiscal management is paying off as rating agency Fitch has affirmed the country's long-term foreign currency rating at A- and revised upwards its outlook to stable from negative.

Responding to the confidence shown by the international rating agency on Malaysia's fiscal prudence, an elated Datuk Seri Wahid Omar said Fitch's rating was now in line with S&P (A-, Stable Outlook) and Moody's (A3, Positive Outlook)."

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Economic Planning noted that Fitch Ratings had also affirmed Malaysia's local currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'A', senior unsecured local currency bonds at 'A', the Country Ceiling at 'A' and the Short-Term Foreign Currency IDR at 'F2'.

"The much awaited positive news shows the prudent fiscal management and economic policies carried out by the government," he said in a brief statement.

Malaysia registered a strong economic growth of 5.6 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2015, despite concerns over the volatility in oil prices and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Inflation, as measured by the annual change in the consumer price index (CPI), averaged significantly lower at 0.7 per cent in Q1.

The country's trade surplus amounted to RM21.3 billion in the quarter while international reserves of Bank Negara Malaysia amounted to RM389.7 billion as at March 31, 2015.

Fitch, in rating Malaysia, said the country's fiscal finances were improving since last year with the general government deficit declining from 4.6 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2013 to 3.8 per cent in last year, General government debt meanwhile declined vis-a-vis the GDP declined from 54.7 per cent at end 2013 to 53.9 per cent at end 2014.

Fitch said it views the progress on the GST and fuel subsidy reform as supportive of fiscal finances.

A further narrowing of the deficit is forecast this year despite lower oil prices. It noted that the depth of Malaysia's local capital markets supports the sovereign's domestic financing needs.--BERNAMA

As far as the speculation of 1MDB affecting the economy, Arul issued a statement to share his meeting with Fitch to explain 1MDB's plan:

Fitch Ratings upgrade recognition of Malaysia's economic strength

“As a Malaysian, I am proud that the country has achieved a Fitch Ratings upgrade from negative to stable outlook. This is the result of an independent review by an external party and represents recognition of the growing strength of the Malaysian economy.

Furthermore, the upgrade is evidence of the Government's success in ensuring the continued economic stability of our country. The Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara in particular have done a commendable job in highlighting the positives of our economic success story.

In relation to 1MDB, we had conversations with Fitch in advance of the upgrade, in which we discussed the company's current situation and provided confidence on the measures being taken. We were open about the challenges we face, outlined our efforts to reduce the company's debt as presented in our rationalisation plan, and provided information on the various actions that have already been taken including the repayment of a RM3.6 billion loan in June.”

- Arul Kanda, President and Group Executive Director
If Fitch is willing to listen, why aren't others giving a reasonable listen?

Vindictive

And, Arul is still keeping himself close to Tony Pua and not giving him the wide open space.

1MDB Already Under Investigation

“1MDB notes certain statements attributed to YB Tony Pua published online today, questioning why no action has been taken against 1MDB by the lawful authorities.

YB Tony Pua has conveniently ignored to highlight that 1MDB is currently the subject of enquiries by a number of authorities, including the Auditor-General, Bank Negara Malaysia, PDRM, and last but not least the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a committee that YB Tony Pua himself is a member of.  1MDB is fully cooperating with these enquiries. Accordingly, evidence and proof relating to the company have been and will continue to be shared with these lawful authorities.

Furthermore, 1MDB has repeatedly issued clarifications to address allegations made by various parties, including Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, YB Tony Pua, and The Edge media group.

The PAC, of which YB Tony Pua is a member of, is the lawful authority to verify allegations such as whether RM42 billion has 'disappeared' from 1MDB.  In the interest of fairness and due process, 1MDB trusts that YB Tony Pua will confirm that the PAC will investigate this specific allegation of "RM42 billion missing" in the same way he is insisting that other allegations against 1MDB are to be investigated.

1MDB reaffirms its previously stated position that if any wrongdoing is found, then action must be taken by the lawful authorities, as per due process and the laws of our country."

- Arul Kanda, President and Group Executive Director
Jabbing back as Tony P kept missing those swinging punches he was accustomed to.

Concern

While reports are saying it is a much needed political relief for Najib, there are political economic concern for PM. To quote the comment from a socio-political activist:
"Congratulation to the government and AWO for able to improve on the rating as they steered the economy. At the same time we should not be having the habit of using this kind of yardsticks only when they're in our favor and shadow play when the same are not in our favor. Nonetheless let us address certain potentially threatening issues in our real economy such as rising cost of living, increasing unemployment, rising cost of doing business and widen inequalities. Government should provide the justification in hiking the retail price of petrol and explain the remedial actions to mitigate the spiral increase in prices."
Its only a relief but not time to gloat.

Some investors are looking beyond rating agency approvals [read Bloomberg on MI here]. Darah Tuah is not convinced of RMK 11 and GTP/ETP [read his blog here and here]. Like Arul, government should keep jabbing back the socio-politico-economy on the right track.

The PSI article delayed for tomorrow or tonight.

SR's sensational attempt for diversion

$
0
0

Still fresh of the oven.

After admitting to having published faked e-mail and made several stunts in their attempt to make a fool of the public, Sarawak Report came out with a new effort to divert public attention from the ongoing expose and investigation into Xavier Justo.

In their latest posting over night, SR claim there was money channeled by the Abu Dhabi-based AABAR directly into the accounts of Dato Najib Tun Razak in some Ambank accounts to the tune of RM2.6 billion.

Read here, and give them the publicity. Lets not hide this stupidity from SR.

The RM30 million donation by Genting group to Yayasan 1Malaysia by WSJ was not sensational enough to attract attention that something bigger had to be concocted. Even the lesser allegation of RM42 million "contribution" in the article is far bigger than that of Genting's contribution which is perfectly legal.

It leads to the question: Is it credible for a businessman to donate RM2.6 billion to anyone for purpose of election?

Secondly, this is coming from SR, who is still in the hot soup of a blackmail and forging scandal.

Still fresh of the the printing press are news report of The Edge being given show cause letter. Indirectly, The Edge acknowledged using fake emails similar to SR by publishing in their latest weekly that they will not be using any such emails.

SR's new revelation is most amusing when considering that they alleged the money transfer for illegal transaction was transferred direct into the personal accounts of Dato Najib. No crooks in their right mind would be that stupid to do such a thing. He may be accused as coward but no ... no ... he is not stupid!

Even a perfectly legal transaction would not make such size of money transfer in such a simplistic manner. Not gonna divulge and share anything, but rest assured it is more complex than that. Ambank will have to report to or get prior approval from Bank Negara Malaysia and blah blah blah ...

If it turns out to be true since one will never know these days, then the claimed adviser to PM, Taek Joh Loh must be a really stupid idiot. It is true that he is just a typical wannabee into jual nama and jual muka. Police should can him. Wharton should recall their MBA Finance awarded to him.

And, maybe that is why Dato Nazir Tun Razak is angry. Jay may have no intention to divert attention from his failure to lead CIMB and resulted in 3,600 employee losing their job. He was unhappy Najib's sudden flush with cash but kept it with competitor Ambank, not his CIMB rotfl!

A major issue of credibility on the part of SR on top of the piles of their already discredited allegations is their insistent to still claim that Good Star is under the control of Jho Loh. It would have been great should it be true in order to teach that plump Penangite a lesson.

Repeated many times and documents presented, Good Star or Javace are companies owned by Petrosaudi! Yet they are still at it with the UBG story. Oh boy!

SR claimed that the transfer was done after a signing ceremony for strategic partnership between 1MDB and AABAR to develop TRX on March 12, 2013. Let Tony P take a swing punch first, then surely Arul will respond immediately.

And, this one is a good laugh. All these banking info that is a new development to SR was supplied to them by local law enforcement including the Attorney General himself.

Ha ha ha ...

Maybe this was the concern of Rafizi when he raised in Parliament of a Singaporean national by the name of Jessica Gurmeet Kaur working in the AG office. The former Pemandu staff will have access to confidential and sensitive investigation information privy to prosecutors. Non-Malaysians could leak info to the enemy!

The biggest laugh must be the noticeable disaapearance of any of the 3 million e-mails allegedly in posession of SR. LOOK MA! NO MORE E-MAILS!

Their latest posting replaced it with several diagrams for 2013, 2014 and 2015 money transfer into Najib's bank account which any 80-year old grandpa could prepare with Photoshop software and taught by his granddaughter..

Without hardly doing any checking, SR's latest attempt for diversion with a sensational new revelation can be easily spotted for it's errors.

Obviously, Clara is hoping to brave it out and just bulldoze through. Trying to ignore the fact that their integrity is questionable and reputation down the drain pipe into the sewer plant nearby Clara Brown's home!

No one except the like of Kelab Che Det or SSTD FB would believe. The joke on the social media is that they will be in their best black baju Melayu and songkok for Monday's swearing in of the new PM. Dato Najib was brought down accordingly before the scheduled June 30th.

Shucks ...  and it was thought there is a new sensational version of Altantunya murder to come out first. Heard another Indian gonna do an SD.

Expect Malaysiakini, TMI, MMO, FMT etc to do their kompang role to quote this idiotic report of SR. Notice which one is being highlighted and the info blacked out.

All these points to a desperate SR as there are dedicated FBs such as Anti Fitnah TMI hounding on the likes of SR. Scotland Yard is coming down, coming down. ScotlandYard is coming down.... My fair lady.

PM's patience meeting it's limit?

PM's latest statement received around 10.30 PM has a different tone than an earlier statement Friday.

Words hardly heard off to come from Dato Najib like "outrageous", and "gutter politics" used. This morning's statement was still appealing for good sense from the media to take appropriate action.

Has his patience with the endless stream of unsubstantiated allegations against him met his limit?

Read below:

YAB PM NAJIB RAZAK :-

3 July 2015

"In recent months, various allegations – all unsubstantiated, and many simply outrageous – have been directed against me and my family.‎

These attacks began when I refused to implement Tun Mahathir’s personal demands. I refused, because I do not believe it is right for Malaysia to be ruled by proxy.

Tun then created a crisis when he recklessly claimed that RM42 billion was missing from 1MDB, when in fact these are audited debts backed by RM51 billion audited assets.

The latest allegation is that I have taken state-linked funds for personal gain. I believe Tun, working hand in glove with foreign nationals, including the now discredited political attack blog Sarawak Report, is behind this latest lie.

Let me be very clear: I have never taken funds for personal gain as alleged by my political opponents – whether from 1MDB, SRC International or other entities, as these companies have confirmed.

It is now clear that false allegations such as these are part of a concerted campaign of political sabotage to topple a democratically elected Prime Minister.

At no point have those making these allegations offered any evidence. All we have heard is that these allegations are based on leaked documents and unnamed investigators. Not once has the source of these documents ever been shown, neither have the documents themselves been provided for verification by lawful authorities.

As we now know, a number of the documents on which recent allegations have been based were reportedly doctored. The person who was leaking these documents is under investigation by authorities overseas for attempting to extort and blackmail his former employer. This says a lot about the reliability of the documents, and those who are using them to damage our government and our country.

Those who continue to mount these attacks should be prepared to face the consequences of their actions. These gutter tactics - in some cases criminal tactics - to overthrow the government will fail. Where appropriate, they will be met with the full force of the law.

It’s a shame that these false attacks motivated by self interest come at a time of unique opportunity for Malaysia – with our Chairmanship of ASEAN this year, and the prize of developed nation status around the corner.

I will stay focused on the work of nation building for the people."

Compare that with this morning's statement. Read below:

PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE STATEMENT

3 July 2015‎ ‎

"Despite the Prime Minister's successful stewardship of Malaysia's economy against global headwinds - as recognised this week by Fitch's upgrade - there have been concerted efforts by certain individuals to undermine confidence in our economy, tarnish the government, and remove a democratically elected Prime Minister.  ‎

"These latest claims, attributed to unnamed investigators as a basis to attack the Prime Minister, are a continuation of this political sabotage. ‎

"It has been reported that criminal leaking of documents, doctoring and extortion has taken place to mislead the media and public.

So it is incumbent on responsible members of the media not to accept documents as genuine unless verified by the appropriate authorities.

Regarding the allegations themselves, it must be noted that 1MDB has already stated that the company never provided funds to the Prime Minister."‎ ‎

Will Arab Malaysian be making a denial?

$

It is at least 48 hours since the revelation by WSJ and SR but no statement or denial have been forthcoming from Arab Malaysia Investment Bank. This is a crucial statement.

WSJ alleged Arab Bank is where money in the billions were transfered into Dato' Najib's personal account. The WSJ reported money was transfered in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Is bank confidentiality holding back Arab Malaysian from making statement?

A facebook posting showed a FBer tested the account by attempting to remit money into the account but was rejected. Not authorised. Does it mean exist but not allowed? Is the account still operational?

In the meanwhile, Lim Kit Siang is hitting hard:

Checkmate: 'No outright denial by Najib raises red flag'

Published and Updated Jul 04, 2015 1:22pm

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's refusing to issue an outright denial over allegations that almost US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) of 1MDB's fund was deposited into his private bank accounts is raising a red flag, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said today.

Lim pointed out that even though the media reported Najib denying the allegation made by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the prime minister skirted around the question of whether state funds had indeed entered his accounts.

"What Najib said last night was 'I have never taken funds for personal gain as alleged by my political opponents – whether from 1MDB, SRC International or other entities, as these companies have confirmed'.

"Why can't Najib just say 'yes' or “no” to the grave WSJ allegation that almost US$700 million was deposited into Najib's personal accounts before the 13th general election.

"Is Najib denying that the two deposits of US$620 million and US$61 million were deposited into his personal bank accounts in March 2013, or he is admitting that there were such deposits but he had never taken the funds for personal gain – whatever Najib's definition of 'personal gain' is," said Lim.

Lim (photo) said the absence of Najib's outright denial raises red flags and presumptions that are detrimental to Najib's innocence, probity and integrity.

"Najib should come out with a straightforward statement denying that there had been two deposits of US$620 million and US$61 million into his personal account in March 2013.

AG should explain

"Or everybody can only conclude that Najib could not deny such vast deposits into his personal bank accounts and the prime minister could only turn and twist about the use of the deposits concerned," he said.

Lim said attorney-general Gani Patail also owed Malaysians an explanation.

WSJ today defended its report, claiming that it was based on Malaysian government investigation papers which had been submitted to Gani and the government and were also sighted by Najib himself.

Lim addded that under the current circumstances, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Cabinet must also act by calling for an emergency meeting of Parliament next week.

"If Najib cannot secure a vote of confidence in the emergency meeting of Parliament, he should resign as prime minister," he said.

Update 8:40 PM

The Attorney General, Tan Sri Gani Patail announced the formation of a Special Taskforce to investigate the WSJ allegation:
PASUKAN PETUGAS KHAS SIASAT DAKWAAN DANA DISALUR KE AKAUN PERDANA MENTERI

Officially an OAP

Was too tired with two meetings in the afternoon today in KL and Putrajaya that we fell asleep at mother-in-law's home after breaking fast.

By 11 PM, woke up to return home and end up meeting someone for coffee to confer. And, that was where we got this surprise cake at 12:10 AM July 5th Malaysian time. Co-incidently, it is still July 4th Independence Day USA.

So it's "official". We have now joined our earlier retired peers to be an OAP.

In actual fact, it is not quite official yet because there was a screw-up by the police when late old man registered our birth at the police station. It gives an additional leeway of 4 extra "working" days before entering the official category of an Old Age Pensioner (OAP).

Come to think of it, the official retirement age from employment have become unclear in recent years. In the past 55 was government official retirement age. Now it has risen to 60. With job security and lifelong employment considered a luxury these days, some lose their job at as early as in their 30s and 40s.

Anyway, what do we feel at 55?

Great, no different than 25, except less vigour physically but no less mentally and intellectually. Thus far, life have been relatively quite fulfilling and exciting. Good family, friends and comrades.

Syukur to Allah that we could reach such mature age. Many close family and friends never reached 55.

Wishes?

These days our wants has not been for much. At one time, the big want was to get a doctoral degree but have long been shelved. Can sustain long hours of reading, and studying.

If there is anything we wish, it would be the modest wish for continued good health, sanity of mind, and great company of family and friends.

Our first order of business as an OAP will be to sort out our EPF. Sorry that there will be less money for PFI financing and development of RRIM land but somebody else's saving could be used for that.

So, expect a cautious market Monday on expectation of a major stock liquidation by EPF. Mind you, a lot of shares need to get sold to pay our contribution .... a lot, you know ... a lot ... a lot as in ONE LOT!

Suing is not as easy as buying murtabak

PKR's MP for Telok Kemang, Dato Kamarul Baharin and PAS's Spiritual Leader, Dato Haron Din could not believe the transfer of such vast sum of money into a personal account. The Mole's Askiah Adam have problem comprehending such possibility. So does one TMI reader TMI, Nur Adilah Ramli here.

A significant portion of the public find it too far fetch for Najib to make such amateurish and illegal transaction. As Najib said in his PC yesterday, “If I want to rob also I won’t do it in Malaysia, that is if I wanted to rob the people.” [read MMO here].

Dato Hishamuddin and Dato Shahrizat Jalil cautioned the public against making sweeping conclusion based entirely on unsubstantiated accusations. Yesterday, PGI Chief confirm existence of tampered e-mail [read Rockybru here].

Only Allah knows the ultimate truth but for us mere mortal, the truth lies with the authority. The statement by AG Tan Sri Gani Patail to "semak" [read here] led some to suspect the existence of documentary evidences.

It made the social media, though believe WSJ's allegation as far fetch, generally insistent on Dato Najib to sue WSJ and SR to prove his innocence.

Problem is suing WSJ is not as easy as buying murtabak said Rizal Mansor, one special officer in the PM Dept. in his FB. This morning, the special officer described Najib's predicament as akin to:

It would be more hilarious to use the example curi murtabak from kuih-selling warong. But then, the social media would make fun of his boss. Such is the dilemma of Najib.

Najib said he will be talking to his lawyer to sue [read TMI here]. The Star reported that he will be suing on Tuesday [read here]. But former AG, Tan Sri Abu Talib Osman said forget about suing but just clarify existence of such Bank account [read TMI here].

In the Wall Street Journal and Sarawak Report, they alleged that money in the billions were remitted to companies in which it was subsequently transferred into the private account of Najib at Arab Malaysian Bank.

The diagram from SR's Adb-to-Abd amended report as below:

Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd have denied making such transfer. Not to mention the company will be subjected to investigation on suspicion of Criminal Breach of Trust for transferring money from a company to a personal account.

Since WSJ have remained steadfast with their allegations, it leaves Najib with no much choice but to sue.

Anyone with banking experience know that it is not easy for such transaction to occur or be left undetected. There is a monitoring mechanism at Bank Negara. No bank would either accept such transfer or crediting the respective account for such amount without any clearance from BNM. On top of that, there is no way BNM would allow the foreign transaction to sell US dollar and buy ringgit to happen at one go. BNM only allow it be done in staggered amount.

It would be a major systemic breakdown for any Tan or Ah Loh to remit and bank in such amount into Najib's personal account.

Despite all these and Singapore had successfully won several lawsuits against WSJ, banking confidentiality will not make the lawsuit as easy as buying murtabak.

Priot to the GE 13, in 2012, Sabah Chief Minister, Dato Musa Aman was accused of accepting money from an underworld boss Michael Chia. A copy of a fake remittance record showing remittance instruction into the account of Musa's son had gone viral. [read Sabah Ground Zero here].

The slandering Sarawak Report was right in the thick of action in reporting this false accusation together with comrade-in-arm Malaysiakini.

Was it Musa planning to sue or to clear himself up with the authorities, there was a legal headache to get cooperation of banks. They are stuck under bank confidentiality law refraining them from making any testimony or declaration.

Made to understand that Najib is considering of suing WSJ and SR locally and abroad.

But, how is he to make a case when BAFIA disallow both Arab Bank and BNM to divulge anything on the accounts except for criminal prosecution?

Without the authorities having made a case out of it yet, Najib's case may get thrown out at case management level. Maybe that is the ulterior reason behind Dato Nazri Aziz's suggestion that Najib not sue [read The Star here].

As it is, BNM and Arab Bank need to make a denial statement today. Otherwise, Najib will be made mincemeat ingredient for murtabak.

That likelihood looks bleak and the public expectedly will make the easy as buying murtabak assumption that Najib had account with Arab Bank.
To "sue" or not to "sue", that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
The Heart-ache, and the thousand Natural shocks
That Flesh is heir to? 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep,
To sleep, perchance to Dream; aye, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come, ....

LRT extention project need a PDP

MyRapid's portal described the LRT2 extention project as follows:
The LRT Line Extension Project which will involve the extension of RapidKL’s two LRT Lines, namely the Ampang Line and Kelana Jaya Line, is one of the government's nation-building initiatives to enhance and integrate the urban public transportation services –one of the National Key Result Areas, which is a priority under the Government Transformation Program.

Owned and managed by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the project’s objective is ultimately to encourage a greater number of public transport commuters raising the modal share from the current 21 percent to 40 percent by year 2030 in line with the target that has been set under the National Land Public Transport Master Plan.

Both lines will pass through some of the most developed and highly populated areas in Klang Valley, connecting at Putra Heights, where an integrated station is developed for the two lines to meet, providing a seamless journey to all commuters.
The portal would want the public to believe the project will look like this picture below:

The current situation at the sites tend to be as follows:

The above picture was taken at Puchong and published in The Star dated January 16, 2015 here.

Things are not seamless since damages to road and drainage not repaired, streetlights malfunctioning, mud overflow causing clogged drainage, furniture and wooden houses damaged, etc.

Civil and systems work awarded in 2011 to contractors are delayed and facing cost over run. Several packages are not completed by the contracted date of 2013 and 2014. Delays have been ranging by 15-28 months. There are reports of bad performance.

One contractor had never done rail work. Coaches to be supplied by the awarded supplier was heard to have problems with one previous client.

For a construction costing RM9 billion, each of the consortiums' combined market capitalisation is not compatible.

One industry source told this blog that Malaysians usually rely on foreign expertise to do systems engineering works and leave the civil and structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical for locals to do.

The setback to hiring a foreigner to assume position as Project Director lies in his inability to handle issues with the local authorities and the public as well as their understanding in the localised history and culture of a particular area.

They are paid very high salaries which is not compatible with locals who could do a better job.

There have been cases of projects managed by foreign parties that failed. The Putra LRT job managed by Bechtel was one example where foreigner fared badly and end up in termination of their services.

One concerned senior engineer confided that the target prices given by construction consortiums to project developer varied widely and it was already indicative of lack of knowledge on rail design. Let alone to optimise the design and manage the work.

He felt the none of the contractors has successfully completed a single inch of system, track and equipment, in particular depot works.

If not done yet, it urgently needs a Project Delivery Partner to oversee the cost, time and quality accountability matters. The project is beseiged with too many issues on safety, health, environmental, and traffic management.

The LRT2 project can currently be described as "the blind leading the blind" with the contractors doing work on "trial and error". This has to stop and problems immediately address before this important NKEA project for greater Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley turn into a major national disaster.

A PDP with the experience in technical, contractual, commercial and legal could manage work with several contractors and consultants simultaneously. [Read in Wikipedia here]

The senior engineer reiterated that someone with the experience of handling similar project from inception to completion must head the tender evaluation.

In case anyone did not notice, we wrote in our posting yesterday:
Only Allah knows the ultimate truth but for us mere mortal, the truth lies with the authority. The statement by AG Tan Sri Gani Patail to "semak" [read here] led some to suspect the existence of documentary evidences.
We are no prophet and God has not spoken directly to us.

However, the authority has. It is NEITHER Sarawak Report, WSJ, The Edge, or other satellite media, NOR Tony Pua and Rafizi. The taskforce on the investigation of the Ambank accounts just gave a statement an hour or two ago, below:

KENYATAAN MEDIA

SIASATAN PASUKAN PETUGAS KHAS BERKENAAN DAKWAAN DANA DISALURKAN KE AKAUN PERDANA MENTERI

There are 6 accounts frozen and 17 accounts from two banks investigated.

There will be those likely to speculate the three accounts mentioned by Wall Street Journal exist. It is most likely but it is not mentioned, thus not confirmed.

Some commentators said Dato Najib could authorise the Banks to issue a statement on his personal accounts and reveal the full content of his banks statement. If it is his accounts, it could be done. But if the accounts do not exist and not his, it cannot be done.

Down there, the public feels Ambank could make a denial statement on the non-existent of such accounts. That is speculations that only leads to perception. No way of stopping what people think. It is easier to get factual.

As of today, there have been no statement other than this from Bank Negara Malaysia. None from Ambank. Yesterday, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said BAFIA does not allow BNM and Ambank to comment on clients' accounts.

Thus far, The Star's claim that there will be a lawsuit by Dato Najib on Wall Street Journal have not happened.

It is not as easy as buying murtabak.

Update 10:30 PM

Just checked our smartphone to find the following message sent during the break of fast:

Subsequently, we received the following at 10:00 PM.

Sarawak Report was showing the following on their website:

With the swings in information streaming in, the suggestion would be to not be too quick wiyh conclusion.

Sit back and watch the events unfold. Heard more interesting to come after Raya.

Could the announcement today be about giving allowance for Ambank to bypass BAFIA to make statement on the alleged Najib's account?

Whether one believe the WSJ document or not, the story is still incomplete. How could such transaction occur and money got deposited? Why 2 years later for BNM; sleeping on the job?

It is the beginning of malam tujuh likur or holiest last 10 nights of Ramadhan. For Muslims, lets not put that to waste.

Ramadhan with Grandfather

Grandfather's house, now belong to youngest uncle

After attending an invitation in the evening followed by a corporate buka puasa yesterday, we finally reached home in the early morning after an early sahur.

Took a bath, and got some clean cloth. That awaken the missus. She mumbled about the last 10 nights of Ramadhan began and falls back to sleep.

At about almost the same time, one YB posted something in one Whas App group. He said to be done with the topsy turvy current politics and focus on the last 10 days of Ramadhan.

Pray and seek barakah, protection and blessing of peace, harmony and prosperity for the nation, and people as well as family.

The very reason no posting on politics or any corporate issue today.

Without saying much, we immediately did our isya prayer, Terawih and many other stuff.

Thought of keeping awake by reading the Quran to wake the missus for her sahur. But eyes too tired to do any reading.

So we kept ourself by going online to mekahlive.net to hear the Imam in Mekah recite the Quran in their Terawih. Wouldn't it be great to be there in Mekah now?

If not, wouldn't it be great to be at our kampong now?

It reminded of our childhood.

The tradition in our kampong at my grandparents' home for the last 10 days was to light lampu raya around the house.

With all the houses putting up lampu raya, the whole kampong would brighten up in the night.

You know how the old folks never tell you why they do certain things and maintain a certain tradition. Same here.

We thought it was the build-up towards the coming Raya festivity. It turns out there was a logical reason for it.

The last 10 days is when the old folks would be going to surau for their late sembahyang malam which ends in the early morning.

The last 10 days is supposed to be the holiest period of the holy month of Ramadhan. [Read this posting by IKIM here].

Old gravel road is not tarred
Back then there was no electricity and naturally no street lights. One has to carry torchlight or lamps to move around at night. So the lampu raya serve to light up the dark jalan kampong for these old folks.

Our childhood was in Johor Baru but we spent a lot of Ramadhan with grandfather in kampong at Batu Pahat.

Any time a family member from Baru Pahat stop over our home in JB before or during Ramadhan, we would persuade our paremts permission to hitch back to grandfather's.

We will be there thoughour Ramadhan till the family return for Raya.

As the eldest cucu, we must have been spoilt by grandfather.

We had uncles of same or younger age. But if we were caught together doing something michievous, they get the spanking but not moi.

Compared to the kids today, we weren't lucky enough to have many toys to play or things to do around the house except school work or chores.

We enjoyed grandfather's home because there were lots of books belonging to our uncle and aunts to read.

At 6 or 7, we must have read their secondary school textbooks. Most of them were in art stream and we would finish reading their Malay literature form 6 hikayat textbooks.

Not to mentioned, their hidden collection of Malay soft porn magazines, Jejaka and Romantika. Blame them for not keeping it secret enough.

Come play time, we make do with toys made on our own from rubber fruit seeds, stalk of banana leaves, etc. If not, it would be long hours of swimming in the two large ponds or games like hide and seek, hopscoth or galah.

We were still learning to fast. Grandfather would encourage us by making a special treat everyday for buka puasa.

There is always some drinks he concocted or fruits picked up from the kebun. Late grandma, just passed away last year, would make different bubur or dishes everyday.

The site of the surau
After buka and maghrib, we would all ride the bicyle together to surau for prayers.

Grandfather was one of the Imam for the surau. They take turn to lead the Terawih.

During prayers, the old folks would fill up the first three saf or line. The kids would be at the back.

Whenever it is time to say the ameen for the fatihah in the prayers or the doa in between prayers, the kids voices could be heard embarassingly loud chanting, "Amin! Amin! Amin!" and sniggering.

There will always be that one or two pranksters at the back who would grab our scrotum while in the sujud position. One can hear them sniggering at our shock in surprise.

One thing different between kids in the past and present, we were not noisy or disregard the elders.

The old folks knew we were not serious in our prayers but they did not get angry or upset as parents today with children at masjid and surau.

After prayers, we would play galah panjang at the surau yard while the old folks have their tea and cakes. The kampong version was a bit rough like American football. One has to catch and grab the person to win back your turn be on offense to collect points.

Home of grandfather's closest brother
At times, the game do get rough as some kids got thrown drench into the stream we called as parit.

When it happens, the old folks would laugh together sportingly.

One will not find such scene at surau and masjid today. People tend to be too serious and strict.

The old kampong ways may seemed lax but it endears the kids with the surau. As they grow up, they will naturally become more mature and and less playful.

There are times we would play hide and seek. We urban kids lose out. These kampong kids could be hiding at the most scariest of places, even in the nearby graveyard.

We would give up and get jeered for not able to find them.

The best time would be as we approach Malam Tujuh Likur or 27th Ramadhan.

That is when the Raya mood can be felt. Family begin to return to kampong.

It is no more lampu raya to lit the pathway but there is like a one up-manship to be the house with the best display of lampu raya.

There are ample food as families would exchange dishes.

There is also the tradition of munjung where one family would cook and distribute it for other close families for buka. Its akin to taking turn to cook to save time to do more ibadah and prepare for Raya.

At about that time, Grandfather would have sold his bales of getah and paid off his workers. There is extra money to buy carbide for the meriam buluh. Night time, one can hear bamboo cannon blasting away.

The ladies would be busy sewing raya cloth or making kueh.

Baking has to be done late night when the younger kids are asleep. Or there will be none left to serve for raya.

The men will be busy making (kacau) dodol, getting firewood ready and prepare the yard.

Such beautiful memories of the past.

These days we only buy ready made cloth or kueh. Even visitors during raya hardly look forward for the raya cookies that is available all years.

Commercialism killing off tradition.

Today grandfather, grandmother and one of our playpal uncle are no more around.

It maybe a coincident but most of our family tend to pass away before or after Ramadhan. Father passed away in Ramadhan, the 18th.

These days Ramadhan is a month to commemurate their passing away with prayers held in their memory.

Time for the children and grandchildren (grandfathers' cucu and cicit) to have their moments.

For Bak (father), Yahi-Yahi (grandfathers), Nyai_Nyai (grandmothers), and Cik-Cik (uncle/aunties) ... Al Fatihah!

After 30 years, the Saga continues

Today is Proton's 30th anniversary.

It was an effort by Tun Dr Mahathir to bring Malaysia towards being an industrialissed country. He practically copied the Japanese, Korean and German industrialisation development model.

There are 14 car producing countries in the world but Malaysia is the only developing country. Proton maybe struggling with its sales now but it is something to be proud off.

Off late, Proton became a target by TV3 to counter attack Tun Dr Mahathir's political attack on Dato Najib. Doubt it is the work of professional media people in TV3 or Media Prima or PMO but one ild school minded Back Op operator. It was an irresponsible, unscrupulous and hare-brained effort when a Black Op at work is publicly known.

Differences in opinion or power struggle is one thing but policies and legacies should not be made collateral damages. If not, the country and rakyat could be made sacrifice for any person's ambition too.

For Proton, being caught in the political crossfire is not the first barrier in it's development. On the hindsight, it seemed appropriate that the first Proton model was called Saga. After 30 years, the Proton's Saga model continues.

From the start, there was opposition to the idea of a national car.

That opposition even culminated into a challenge to topple the UMNO party president and Prime Minister in April 1987.

Proton was one of the issue used to justify the challenge. Till today, both Tengku Razaleigh and Tun Musa Hitam remained steadfast in their view of Proton. They insisted Proton has not achieved the economic objective it set itself for because it was not an achievable objective from the beginning.

They had then simplify Proton as merely an assembling plant for Mitsubishi but given favourable tax incentive.

One reason seldom mentioned openly but their boys would do so in private was that the Proton proposal came from one Taiwanese by the name of Rin Kin Mei that was rejected by many other countries. Naturally, they viewed Proton served to only enrich him.

There is some truth to the allegation but not the whole truth. Clearly, such view is pessimistic, lack the far sightedness and wisdom.

There is a Malay saying. "Kalau tak dipecahkan ruyung, manakan dapat sagunya."If one do not start somewhere, you will not get the benefit from such effort.

Great economic powerhouses of today became one they are because they dare to venture to make that bold step, work and perservere till it succeed. One has to do to be able to learn - be it methodically through good strategy and planning or via trial and error - to build and develop anything.

Through thick and thin, Proton built itself up from only the capability to provide body frame to the first Saga till the first truly National Car rolled out the plant in 2003. The model was Proton Waja and it was the model that used the first Malaysian made engine.

That is something the foreign car makers doing assembling do not contribute to the Malaysian economy and progress.

Today, Proton is not just about it's 11,000 workforce but to use Dato Najib's seldom used term, it is an eco-system that has 77,000 employees, vendors and distributors, within and without Malaysia.

With only 800 engineers, Proton have developed technologies and own IP on some 2,900 patents. Not bad compared to car companies like VW which have something like 15,000 engineers.

It is too bad that Proton's latest model is not selling like hot cake. By right, it should.

Unknown to many, the 2015 launched Iriz model was a car that combined European design, German technology and Japanese reliability but yet Malaysian price.

That brings us to the latest problem of Proton. In the past few months their accumulated internal problems have translated into major drop in sales. It plummeted from 10,000 the year before to 5,000. For the first time, Proton fell from their usual top selling car maker in Malaysia to third behind Perodua and Honda.

The current management team under Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar is working hard to address lots of legacy issues with the vendor system, distributorship, etc. The experience of DRB-Hicom as car assembler to few foreign brand of cars brought into Proton the exposure and experience to address past legacy problems in order to put the company in better footing.

Already in the pipeline are 3 new upgrade models for Saga, Perdana and Persona. Read about it in Bigdogdotcom's here as he gives a historical journey of Proton.

Part of the predicament of Proton today had it's roots in the insidious attempt by the past administration to "destroy" Proton. It happened under Khazanah ownership and their nominated CEO and Executive Chairman, Dato Azlan Hashim.

That was the time Proton sold of MV Agusta for cheaps. The buyer sold one third of the company for millions. The believe was someone had eyed the land of the Shah Alam plant. Progress was intentionally stunted. The company was not developing technologies and churning out "badging" models.

Unable to yet turnaround another company or operationally develop any investee company, Khazanah sold off Proton to Syed Mokhtar after unethically and by right, illegally orchestrate to jack the stock prices.

In the current political onslaught, it is claimed that Tun M asked for RM2 billion bailout for Proton but was refused. That is completely untrue. Something known for quite sometime before the current political turmoil is that Proton never expected government to pay the R&D rebate.

Early under Dato Najib's administration, he introduced R&D rebate in one of the annual budget presentation in Parliament to encourage companies to undertake R&D. Proton had done lots of R&D. Over 5 years, their claims for rebate had accumulated to about RM1.7 billion, not RM2 billion. MOSTI had send auditors to verify their R&D spending.

Another issue used to bring down Proton was the grouses with the Teksi Malaysia program or TEKS1M. The allegation was Proton failed to deliver but the other side to the story was SPAD did not stood their ground and stick to their plans, but secede to the demand of taxi drivers.

SPAD planned to face out the current taxis and upgrade taxis into a better and improved quality vehicles. They gave the specs and Proton agreed. They spent time and money to ready themselves for  3,000 such vehicle.

When it was time to deliver, taxi protest for the higher price and SPAD did not hold their ground. They asked Proton to remove many of the installed specs and went about town and TV3 saying Proton did not deliver in time.

Taxi driver obviously are reluctant to pay more so they complained that some of the fittings are unnecessary. They wanted to be given other choices of vehicle. Latest heard Toyota will offer their Innova but at prices RM15,000 higher than Proton.

SPAD people may have their side of the story. Leave their comment and appreciate they abide by code of conducts set.

Part of the rejection by Taxis drivers is the negative view they have of Malaysian products. Generally, Malaysians still have remnants of colonised mind as they seemed over awe with orang putih and too overly critical of anything Malaysian.

Malaysians need to appreciate an important fact that buying Malaysian products and using Malaysian services create jobs, gives economic multiplier impact on the economy and boost national morale and confidence.

Sometimes Malaysian products and services are as good or if not, better than foreign goods. Seriously, Malaysians should stop having such negative view because though far inferior to Malaysian product and services, other nationalities exhibit great pride of their produced goods and services.

Such negative attitude could be laden with racist stereotyping. Just because lots of Melayu are employed, products like Proton and MAS are look at cynically and seldom are unfairly cast aside as inferior.

One segment of the population cry out against so-called policy discrimination but on the other hand, such attitude and their practise, which it is more blatant these days, are more blatant reverse discrimination.

For 30 years forward, Proton should prepare themselves to be more independent as in less dependent on government help. Government coffer is limited and should be directed more for the welfare of the rakyat.

Seldom is the case, assistance given to corporations only serve to line-up the pockets of tycoons than  the socio-economic role it is supposed to do. Their CSR are seldom mere white wash. Cases in point are the IPPs tycoon like YTL's Tan Sri Franscis Yeoh and Ananda Krishnan.

Rakyat have become weary of corporations including GLCs and SLCs and view them as merely opportunistic keparat. Part of the reason behind 1MDB's effort  to restructure the RM100 billion a year subsidy guzzler IPP industry was appealing.

Tun M is not wrong to say that Proton cannot compete and jobs will be lost if Proton is not given some form of preferential treatment or protection. With AFTA already within sight, it is not a reasonable expectation and the realistic way forward is to work and persevere.

However, MAI is not right in their believe that open market is the answer to develop local auto industry.

It could have been better and honest had they say Proton and other national cars should not be complacent. They need to be more serious in their business development to develop market competive products and venture abroad.

Tuan Madani of MAI's statement in The Edge sometime back lack the far sightedness. His insidious opportunistic intention was obvious when he said the national automotive industry's direction as planned under the NAP 2014 was to have more non-national car.

In that respect, Proton have made an important tie-up with Japanese 3rd largest auto manufacturer, Suzuki and the deal is very flexible than past venture with other technology partners.

In countries like South Korea, the government fund research and development. South Korean are so nationalistic that they will only buy Korean cars. That is how they made it instead of the ever sceptical and pessimistic Malaysians and government.

This is not making accusations on the government or Proton management or rakyat attitude or politicians' and their scorch earth game but the reality of today.

Things have changed, the world have changed and Proton cannot keep relying on Tun M's political back-up for survival. The 90 year old, whose birthday is tomorrow, will eventually move on. It is also time for a serious national reflection on where we should be heading as nation. The "other" side are embracing change but some of "us" are holding on to the past.

It is also time to realise that a nation is judged on how it takes care of the less fortunate over the well endowed. And, a nation economic program must have the benefit of the rakyat in mind and not just to serve the limited interest of capitalist and non-human corporations without faces and soul.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE: The Magician's Birthday

$

In the magic garden
Some were singing, some were dancing
While the midnight moon shone brightly overhead.

The stars so gaily glistened
And the sphinx in silence listened to
The magician tell of lives that he had led.

Let the bells of freedom ring
Songs of love to Friday's king.

Let's all go to the magician's birthday
It's in the forest, but not so far away
Much to do and so much to say
While we listened to the orchid orchestra play.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear magician, happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you (dear magician), happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you (dear magician), happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you (dear magician), happy birthday to you.

Then at the dead of midnight
As we watched the dancing firelight
The air grew cold and seemed to dull the flame.
The fire died, the music faded
Filled with fear of death we waited
For now we knew some evil was to blame.

I challenge you, I challenge you all
For all you own and all you know
And by all the powers of darkness I will
Steal what is mine

Surrender now or face my spite
I grant you it may be Friday night
But did you know this day
Also numbers thirteen.

First I give you fire
I turn your fire into a sleepy stream
Yes but now I give you nightmares
From your horror I'll create a dream

You cannot fight me for I have the sword of hate
But one thing you can't see, my answer is simply
An impenetrable fortress
Of love - love - love.....

[FINALE]

The fear went as quickly as it came
The air was clear, the fire burned again
The flames leapt, the organ played
The swans sang to greet the day

And then we knew that
Love will find love will find love will find
Love will find love will find love will find
Love.....

Money, Mercedes and Behind Janis Joplin's Merc

Been busy around the house.

Not so much sprucing things up for the Hari Raya festivity but more of us finally getting around to throw out the junks accumulated over the years. Need to free up space in the apartment.

Already beat up that we decide to complete it after breaking fast. While laying down to take a nap, read into one Rosli Mohd Sah's Facebook posting [the poster above]. He meant it for those idealists that talked too much.

Many idealists eventually face up to the reality of money and ended up compromising not only their struggle but their principle and values. At times, there are non idealist preaching virtues and talking of struggle on principle ground but it could be those whose interest were not met.

Talking about compromises, no song expressed it more than 60s hippie blues singer-songwriter Janis Joplin's classic, Mercedes.

Janis epitomises the new woman role model for the an era that found new heroes and models in activists and entertainers from the traditional politics, busines and sports. [read a pdf fie here]. It was an era filled with the preaching and virtues of peace and freedom.

So this song came out rather odd ...

"Mercedes Benz"

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?

Everybody!
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

That's it!
Even't this song eventually submitted itself to commercial capitalist as baby boomers are in the driver seat in the economy and social position.

Interestingly, it is the Wall Street Journal here that we found the story behind the song Mercedes Benz. Reproduced below:
The Story Behind Janis Joplin’s ‘Mercedes Benz’

The songwriters, musicians and producers behind ‘Mercedes Benz’ recall how Janis Joplin recorded the hit song three days before she died of a drug overdose

Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz” was an accident. The song’s lyrics were written at a Port Chester, N.Y., bar in August 1970 during an impromptu poetry jam between Joplin and songwriter-friend Bob Neuwirth. The lyrics—a sardonic prayer for a sports car, a color TV and a night on the town—were inspired by the first line of a song written by San Francisco beat poet Michael McClure.

About an hour after the song was completed in Port Chester, Joplin performed it a cappella on a whim when she took the stage at the town’s Capitol Theatre. Then on Oct. 1, when she was in Los Angeles recording her album “Pearl,” she sang “Mercedes Benz” in the studio for fun. After she died of a drug overdose three days later on Oct. 4, the song was added to the album.

Issued as a single in 1971 on the B-side of Joplin’s hit “Cry Baby,” “Mercedes Benz” has since been covered by more than 30 artists and used by Mercedes-Benz in its car ads. In advance of the 45th anniversary of Joplin’s death in October, road manager John Byrne Cooke, Mr. Neuwirth, Mr. McClure, and Clark Pierson and Brad Campbell of Joplin’s Full Tilt Boogie Band talked about the song’s evolution. Edited from interviews.

John Byrne Cooke: Back in the summer of 1970, Janis was on tour with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, arriving in New York at the start of August. On Saturday, Aug. 8, Janis and the band performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., and then appeared at Harvard Stadium on Aug. 12. Three days later, she attended her high-school reunion in Port Arthur, Texas, and traveled to Los Angeles in September to record “Pearl” at Sunset Sound. She was happy and knew she was hitting a new level in her singing career.

Bob Neuwirth:
I first met Janis before she was famous. We both played the same small clubs in San Francisco in 1965. In early August 1970, I was living in New York when Janis came to town for a series of performances. She was staying at the Hotel Chelsea. On Aug. 8, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about having to travel an hour north to perform in Port Chester. She felt the opening acts—Seatrain and Runt—would attract a crowd that didn’t understand her music.

Janis had spoken often about how much she admired actress Geraldine Page. I knew Geraldine’s husband, Rip Torn, and since they both were in town, I invited them to come with us late that afternoon in the limo. While Janis was still upstairs getting ready, Rip and Geraldine came over for a drink at El Quijote, a Spanish restaurant in the hotel. I didn’t tell Janis they were coming. I wanted it to be a surprise. When she came down and saw Geraldine, she lit up. A few margaritas later, they were old pals, and we were ready to go. We rode up in one car and the band traveled in another.

Around 7 p.m., after the Capitol sound check, we had a couple of hours to kill before Seatrain and Runt finished their sets. So the four of us walked to a bar about three minutes away called Vahsen’s [at 30 Broad St.]. At the table, Janis and Geraldine bonded, and all of us were getting into it. At some point, Janis sang out, “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz.” Earlier, in San Francisco, Janis had heard Michael McClure’s song and it stuck with her. But she couldn’t remember the rest of it.

Michael McClure:
Allen Ginsberg introduced me to Bob Dylan when Bob was in San Francisco in December 1965. After we met and hung out, Bob gave me an autoharp— a stringed Appalachian folk instrument. Bob knew I wanted to write songs. I kept the instrument on my mantle for three months before learning to play it. In 1966, while I was writing “Freewheelin’ Frank” with Hells Angel Frank Reynolds, [musician] George Montana came over in the evenings with strange instruments, and we’d add music to the songs I was writing and singing.

One of my songs started, “Come on, God, and buy me a Mercedes Benz.” The song would get longer and shorter each time I sang it. One day I got a call from [actor-singer] Emmett Grogan. He had heard me sing the song at my house and began singing it with his friends at a local pool hall. On the phone, he said he was shooting pool with Janis and that she was singing it, too. I told him I had nothing against that.

Mr. Neuwirth: At the Port Chester bar, Janis sang the line a few times. Then Rip and Geraldine began banging their beer glasses on the table to keep time. It was like a sea shanty. Janis came up with words for the first verse. I was in charge of writing them down on bar napkins with a ballpoint pen. She came up with the second verse, too, about a color TV. I suggested words here and there, and came up with the third verse—about asking the Lord to buy us a night on the town and another round.

Janis and I were giggling and showing off a bit in front of Rip and Geraldine. The alcohol wasn’t meant to do anything except keep us laughing in that bar, but it assumed control, and the result was “Mercedes Benz.” I figured that what we were doing there was just an exercise to impress Rip and Geraldine and pass the time. Nothing more.

While we were lost in all this blather and laughter, John Cooke, her road manager, came blasting in close to 9 p.m. to tell Janis she was on in 15 minutes. The next thing I knew we were back up the block at the Capitol. Janis came on stage, and after singing “Tell Mama” and “Half Moon,” she surprised everyone by announcing she wanted to sing a new song.

On the bootleg recording from the concert, she says from the stage: “I’d like to do a song of some significance, now. I just wrote it at the bar on the corner, so I don’t know all the words yet. I’m going to do it Acapulco,” which had been my funny way of saying “a cappella.” I think she decided to sing it to further impress Geraldine and Rip.

Janis stomped off the beat and began belting out the lyrics, the way she had done at the bar. The band soon tried to fit in as best they could, and then they reprised the last verse. What’s interesting is that the second verse doesn’t include the “Dialing for Dollars” line. She must have added it later before recording in the studio in L.A., since it’s not on the Harvard Stadium bootleg either.

When Janis finished, she said to the audience: “Thank you, thank you, thank you. That’s not even a song, you know. They turned the jukebox up, and we kept singing it anyway. They turned up ‘Hey Jude’ so loud we had to order another drink.”

Clark Pierson (drummer): The band was pretty surprised she sang “Mercedes Benz” that night. We didn’t have a key for the song and didn’t know how to put it. We also didn’t realize she was going to sing it alone. We just all looked at each other and then tried to follow along. Janis could remember lyrics stone-cold flawlessly, so that wasn’t a surprise to me. The audience was just staring at first, like, what’s going on? Then they had smiles and were clapping along in time. Several nights later she sang it again at Harvard Stadium, which turned out to be her last concert.

Brad Campbell (bassist): On “Mercedes Benz,” Janis wanted to accompany herself on guitar. She took out her Gibson Sunburst and whispered to us, “Watch me boys.” But instead of playing it, she just sang. We eventually played a few notes here and there and sang where we could, figuring she wanted us to follow her.

Mr. McClure:
At some point in August 1970, Janis called. She said she was performing the “Mercedes Benz” song but that hers was different than mine. She sang it over the phone. When she was done, I said it was OK. Then I went for my autoharp and sat on the stairs and sang her mine over the phone. Janis’s version was sweet and wry and had the grace of a riddle. Mine was much more outspoken, funny and ironic. Janis laughed and said she liked hers better. I said, “That’s OK, you can sing yours.” And that’s the last I heard of it until “Pearl” came out and I saw my name with Janis’s on the song credit. [Mr. Neuwirth’s name was added later].

Mr. Pierson: On Oct. 1, Full Tilt and Janis were at Sunset Sound in L.A. recording “Pearl” when something happened to the tape recorder that caused everything to come to a halt. As producer Paul Rothchild tried to fix it, we started getting antsy, especially Janis, who didn’t like sitting around. She was still in the vocal booth and could see through the glass that our energy was fading. To kill time and keep us amused, she started to sing “Mercedes Benz” in there.

Mr. Campbell: I could see Janis in the booth. She beat off time by stomping her feet on the floor with her sandals. The bracelets jangling on her arm and the stomping of her feet provided the rhythmic sound you hear on the record. Her eyes were open as she sang, but they seemed closed, as if she were far away. When the song was done, she said, “That’s it,” followed by her famous cackle. She always surprised herself.

Mr. Neuwirth:
Paul Rothchild told me later the problem was with his 2-inch tape recorder. The heads shifted or something and needed to be readjusted. Paul had a ¼-inch safety reel going that ran all the time as a backup in case there was an idea he missed in between takes when the 2-inch main recorder was off. While Paul worked to fix the 2-inch tape recorder, Janis sang “Mercedes Benz” on a whim. Fortunately, the safety tape caught it.

Mr. Cooke:“Mercedes Benz” was the last song Janis recorded. Three days later I found her body in her room at the Landmark Motor Hotel. She had overdosed on heroin that was way stronger than street heroin had any right to be. For the next few days, everyone was in shock. That Thursday, Paul Rothchild played for us everything he had on tape. It was almost an album. Paul and the band worked for another 10 days to create the best instrumental tracks to go with the existing vocals. Although she had sung “Mercedes Benz” a cappella, Paul knew we had to use it as is.

Mr. Neuwirth:
About 20 years ago, I had a guitar case overflowing with stuff. It was so full I couldn’t close the lid with the instrument inside. I went through all the junk in there and found four square napkins on which I had jotted down the “Mercedes Benz” lyrics in 1970. I have no idea where those napkins are today. I’d love to find them. I put them someplace in my house, but I can’t remember where.

As Najib camp go #KekalNajib, DAP move in on Putrajaya

Investigating is still on-going.

There are doubts and questions raised on the various expose by Wall Street Journal or Sarawak Report or The Edge. CIMB Islamic CEO points to possibilities of fake documents revealed by WSJ.

It still needs Task Force investigators to put the pieces together into a credible case.

In the meanwhile, Tun Dr Mahathir seemed to have laid back in Ramadhan. Tony Pua and Rafizi has tone down.

It is left it to foreign media to do the attack on Dato Najib, wife and political establishment.

Even pro-establishment The Star already showing their pro-opposition fangs in their reporting [read Rocky Bru here].

From the FB postings of Dato Najib's buka puasa with social media last night, the message that will be carried soon will be to #Kekal Najib.

He is fighting back as one source said last night. There will be a counter attack to come.

The issues of 1MDB took a breather subsequent to the arrest of Xavier Justo in Bangkok. The Edge pull up the handbrake when they admitted by saying will stop using any fake e-mail

It was WSJ that managed to resurrect the attack with the allegations of funds transfer into Najib's personal account at Ambank.

WSJ then took the issue to a different direction to reveal what looks like to be compilation of deposit transaction into Datin Seri Rosmah's bank account at Affin Bank.

Her response through her lawyer was to call for investigation into the breach of BAFIA.

Earlier Dato Dr Puad Zarkashi expressed suspicion as his statement accused investigators leaking information to WSJ.

Subsequently, Raja Petra leaked names of Bank Negara Malaysia officials allegedly to have leaked the information. RPK could have got the lead on this or he may be just spinning. [Read Rocky Bru here]

Latest from WSJ, they had also resurrect the allegation that money was channeled to Jho Loh's company Good Star Ltd. [Read Unspinners here]

The Edge and SR had been playing this script before Xavier Justo's capture. 1MDB had explained that Good Star is a subsidiary of Petrosaudi.

Can only expect something explosive to happen next week before the long Hari Raya holiday break.

1MDB and WSJ revelations will definitely be the flavour of conversation during the Raya visitions. They may come up with more sensational story to the already spicy flavour.

So the Najib side must come up with more explosive diversion to direct attention to the latest and hottest revelation.

The pro-Tun side could be thinking of something too. Maybe they do not need to do anything.

Tun M may have got Najib where he wanted. He was seen exceptionally happy and jovial at his birthday buka puasa do at Yayasan Kepimpinan Perdana two nights ago.

One blogger attempted as he repeated his favourite theme on Tabung Haji and personal attack against TH Chairman Dato Azeez Raheem without providing anything new.

His obsession is strange and suspicious. Does he has the evil intention to see a public breakdown in confidence with TH and a bank run to erupt? How irresponsible!

But then again, it looks like this episode of exposing and counter exposing is not doing anything good to neither UMNO nor Malay politics.

It has put UMNO and the nation in a serious crisis of confidence which time may not be sufficient to resolve. Tun M could end up being accused of burying his party.

The other Malay political parties are not doing any better. PAS has just undergone a major internal party upheaval.

DAP and submissive PKR have chucked PAS out of Pakatan Rakyat.

What's left is merely formality though Lim Kit Siang had recently mentioned of a possible U turn to still cooperate to face a general election. At the grassroot PAS is still sore with DAP.

The losing faction in PAS have regrouped themselves as G18.

They were supposed to join PASMA and turned the NGO into a political party. There have been a change of heart since interim President Dato Fakhrolrazi wish to remain and be the party President.

Heard G18 have purchsed KITA and is in the process of turning it into Parti Demokratik Islam. Sounds similar to German's Christian Democrat.

PKR is just waiting for the internal fight between Azmin and Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah to break out. Talk is Azmin is extending hands with both sides of the UMNO divide.

Current thinking among political pundits is UMNO and BN is not expected to win the next general election.

Investigation and due process will take forever. It only entrenched public perception to assume UMNO as guilty without the need to be charged.

Even if investigation turns up empty, it does not make it any easier. Having Najib removed and replaced by Tan Sri Muhyiddin is no assurance either.

With all Malay political parties in turmoil, DAP is tightening their grip on Putrajaya and closing in for the power kill ...

Amid 1MDB troubles, opposition eyes Putrajaya win with ‘Malay economic tsunami’
Published: July 10, 2015 01:17 PM GMT+8

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — As allegations over 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) weigh hard on the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), a strategist for the federal opposition is already laying out the roadmap for a victory in the next general election.

DAP’s Liew Chin Tong said today that the opposition can ride a “Malay economic tsunami” to take over the federal government with just 38 marginal seats in Peninsular Malaysia if a mere 6 per cent of voters swing away from BN.

“In the Malay economic tsunami that is to come, Umno will be buried in these mixed, semi-urban constituencies,” the DAP national political education director said in his analysis titled “The Peninsula dominoes”.

“Focusing on the middle ground with strong leadership, clarity in policy and a convincing message to unite all ethnic groups while riding on the wave of a brewing Malay revolt could just tilt the balance,” the Kluang MP said, attributing the antipathy among Malay voters to “economic hardships” imposed by the ruling government.

Liew said the battle for the 14th general election due in three years’ time would be in peninsular Malaysia, where 73 of BN’s Election 2013 haul of 88 seats are located.

Out of these 73 seats won by BN, 38 were won with less than 10 per cent margin.  Out of the 38 BN marginal seats, 27 of them were won with less than 6 per cent margin, while the remaining 12 were won with between 6 per cent and10 per cent margin.

“Indeed a 6 per cent uniform swing would wipe out 27 marginal seats and send Barisan Nasional to the opposition bench,” the DAP Johor chief said.

He noted that Umno had kept its “safe seat” Rompin in a by-election this May but with a vote share falling by 6 per cent, saying that Umno would lose the 27 seats if the by-election result is used to measure the potential swing in Malay voter support to the opposition.

According to Liew, the 38 marginal seats that the opposition has a chance of grabbing away from BN are largely mixed seats (22) with less than 70 per cent Malay voters, while the remaining 16 have more than 70 per cent Malay voters.

“If one looks at the states of which the marginal seats are from, apart from the three Parti Keadilan Rakyat seats in Kelantan, which were allegedly lost due to sabotage by local PAS branches, and the seven seats from Kedah, there rest are essentially West Coast Peninsula, semi-urban, multiethnic seats, most of them with a small Malay majority in ethnic composition,” he said.

In Election 2013, BN failed to regain a two-third majority as it won only 133 of the 222 federal seats, while Pakatan Rakyat took 89 seats. A win of 112 seats is needed for a simple majority.

Liew is the mastermind behind a Pakatan Rakyat gamble in Umno stronghold state Johor in Election 2013 that successfully ousted several BN stalwarts, with a haul of five out of 26 federal seats there.

BN is embroiled in controversy over claims Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak received US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from 1MDB.

Umno is also facing a crisis due to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s bid to remove Najib as prime minister over 1MDB and other scandals.

But the federal opposition also has its own troubles after Pakatan Rakyat was declared dead recently while leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sentenced to five years’ jail.

DAP has in the past few years sought to overcome its image as a Chinese-centric party with the influx of new Malay members such as national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said.

DAP ally PAS has yet to come out with a final decision on splitting with it, while PAS progressives have set up a new movement that could well be part of the new opposition line-up.

Malay Mail Online
If Agong is insistent on a Malay PM, an opposition win will still put DAP in the driver seat and holds control over the opposition turned ruling party cabinet.

They could either put a puppet Malay as done in Penang to be PM or even offer one Malay of their own.

To the Malays, the fight and also the festivity continues.
